Radiator Fan Spinning?

When is the radiator fan supposed to be spinning?

I have a 09 Civic it spins quiet often and im wondering if its normal.
It spins in the morning when I start the car, it goes on and off. It even spins when im at a red light.

Is all this normal or is there something I need to be concerned about?

It comes on automatically. Stop and go traffic, idling, etc.

I would say so. Thats what the fan is for. Its not cooling things if its not coming on.

I don't think it's normal..

He said it comes on when he starts the car. That doesn't make any sense, the car is cold when he starts it. It should only come on when your car is warmed up and you're either idling or in stop and go traffic, that's it. Mine rarely comes on unless like I said I'm in traffic. Even if you're cruising normally with no traffic say 50-60 and then you come to a stop light for a minute it shouldn't really kick in. If you're using A/C in the summer it will turn on more, but I doubt he's using A/C now. Are you using A/C? lol.

Either way it should not turn on when you just start the car..

I disagree with "just driving the car", something is seriously wrong with it it seems... 375 km on a full tank, and the rad fan turning on when he just starts the car (it's not even hot outside) is not normal.

PS. Hello Spike remember me? I used to have the red 240 S13 coupe and came to the Burlington meets with Jack back in the day.

Yeah, it probably shouldn't come on at start-up, but I'm wondering if it may be the A/C compressor turning on. With the new Civics, when the defrost is on, so is the A/C compressor. The indicator light on the dash doesn't show that the A/C is on, but the compressor is running.

I'm not going to bother reading the whole thread, so forgive me if this has already been said.

It's your condensor fan that is on. You either have your defroster on or your a/c.

Ahh, true.

Try starting the car cold with all the climate control crap turned off.
