Question Using AC condenser fan together with rad fan

I used to have an AC system, took everything out except the fuses in the under-hood fuse/relay box, AC **** on the centre console, and the full AC harness.

I have aquired a full size rad that comes with a regular rad fan with shroud, and an AC fan. Both have plugs on them.

I would like to make some use of the condensor fan, since it is there.

For those of you that have AC from dealer, you know that when you turn the interior air flow to full windshield defrosting position, it triggers the AC right? So every now and then, when I turn it to windshield position, the AC button goes green and the engine takes a load and I quickly turn that button off. I guess it is doing that because I still have AC Compressor and AC Condenser Fan fuses in the box?

So now, I want to make use of this extra AC Condenser fan, and I have heard people talking about making a relay and a switch and whatnot, but I am really clueless when it comes to electrical stuff, hell I don't even know what is the proper meaning of a "relay". I say that because people say it :P

But anyway, I guess you can just splice that AC fan wire into the rad fan wire and when the rad fan goes on, the AC fan goes on as well? But I don't want to do that.

So (here comes question 1, finally) I thought about taking out the Compressor fuse, since there is none, and leave the Condenser fan fuse in. Plug the AC Condenser motor plug into the original AC harness, and I can just use the AC **** as a switch to activate the Condenser fan for extra cooling, right?

Question 2, if the above method works, is there a way to stop the triggering effect when I turn the air flow to full windshield? And use that AC **** strickly as a manual switch for AC fan?

Thanks!

just wire up the a/c switch to turn on the condenser fan...thats the simple way to do it

Matt, is that the method in my question #1?

yea...but I'm not sure how the circuit works...cuz it might need the compressor to come on for the fan to come on if they are relayed together or something like that...so u gotta look at the wiring diagram and see how the circuit works...if it works that way then u can do it that way...or u can just hardwire it from the condenser fan to switch with a relay and fuse inline

The relay box has compressor and condenser as a separate relay. I will pull the compressor fuse, plug in the condenser fan and turn on the ****, see if that works.

If you have overheating issues with your full size rad, then you have other issues that a manual control won't fix.

I would think the whole exercise is quite moot. You would be better off getting a new shroud made with twin TFAL fans... if you're SOOO worried about heat.

but the fans are also.... not so relevant... the shroud is the key part here... you have a full size rad... you should be using a full size shroud.

Bruno, I am not really worrying about heat. I guess this exercise is just to see if the method I propose works. As pulling air in also (and should) cool down the header, since it is right in front of it.

Just some thoughts, part is there and free anyway, might as well make some use for it.

to do this properly you'd trace the wiring diagram for the AC switch, then pick out the wire that activates the circuit, feed that to a new relay, then wire the relay to the fan. you can't use the AC button as it is, since it ties into the ECU.

Wouldn't it be the same to go through it via ECU cause the end result is to have the fan on while I disconnect the compressor relay?

you could also use the ECU output for the compressor clutch (if there is such a thing on a Honda ECU - I dunno cuz I never had AC) and wire that to a relay. but you wanna avoid driveability issues you mentioned in your initial post, so you wanna avoid going through the ECU if possible. you never wanna let the ECU see that the AC switch is on basically.

There is that compressor clutch relay, but I think this relay stuff is beyond my knowledge in electrical work.
