Help with Wheel Configuration.

My cousin just blew 2 rear tires apart, and bent the other rear rim, so both rear tires are gone and so is one rim. This happened when one of the rear tires suddenly collapsed and the wheel hit a ditch, both rear tires were almost 0% thread.

Rear rims were steelies 13inch, it’s his daily driver, so he had two 14inch steelies off a lancer lying around and he put those on.

I actually never experienced this, but he wanted to know if it’s dangerous if he puts the 14inch steelies on.

I told him it would be like putting a universal larger rim on, I’m probably wrong, I seriously never came along such a dilemma.

So the question is can he drive with those rims or not, he test drove it they seem fine, nothing is touching, but he did have one concern when he put the 14inch rims on there was less stud thread left compared to the 13inch steelies, he’s scared that the wheels might fall off.

What do you guys think, better yet someone who knows this well, I don’t want him to drive and then crash at like 100.

Thanks.

He's find to drive on it like that, and long as they are both on the rear or both on the front, He's fine.

steelies are usually hubcentric, measure the size of the hub on the lancer wheels. also check the shape of the lancer lug nuts, some are straight taper, some are acorn on diff't vehicles. you're supposed to use the right type for the wheels.

odds are if he drives 'normal', he should be ok. but it concerns me that he wore his tires out to the point that they blew up. esp considering we're just finishing up winter/ice/snow.

and yes, spike prolly meant use the same pair on each axle.

Yes, it’s something similar to what you are saying about the hub centre he was worried about. I went over and had a look; the lug nuts are the same, just like any ol' nut, not covered or acorn shape. The centre was fine as well.

He described that while he put the rim on, it didn't quiet fit like the 13inch flat, but it did, when he tightened everything up.

so we took one wheel (14inch) off and re-fitted the 13inch, to our feel the 13inch had play too, it didn't sit exactly flat on the drum( until tightened ), we looked inside both steelies, and everything was the same, took us a good 15 minutes to see that the design of the touching part of the inside of the steelies were slightly different, one was triangle the other was more squarish, but noticing the drum which is flat, we didn't think, or at least I didn't think it would matter that much, as long as he drove it normal.

Again thanks spike & bbarbalu
