Wheel Weight vs Wheel Rigidity
#12
What this article does well is point out that there is no sense in pursuing a lightweight wheel, if that wheel has not been designed in a rigid way.
With that said however, it is important to note that you do not want a wheel that is TOO rigid! it is normal for a wheel to flex in a car as much as 10% under extreme circumstances.
If you had a rock solid wheel, it would not be able to endure, nor dissipitate the stresses and tension that would then make their way to your chassis and result in some very unwanted performance characteristics.
On the other hand, a wheel that flexes too much would result in sloppy handling, and horrible grip.
A true quality wheel will allow the flexing to occur precisely. So the key is to find a balanced wheel that combines the factors of Lightweight and Rigidity. Hence why the Enkei MAT wheels, and their higher end counterpart AME are such great wheels. It's a shame they are so under rated here in North America.
