ANOTHER "what car" thread
So, Im kinda/sorta looking for a winter/second car now that Ive decided to keep the Si for now. Looking for something to drive to and from work, about 150k's a day and something with a little more room then the Si.
Havent looked too seriously yet, Im trying to gather some info on whats good and not-so-good. I dont want to spend alot of money, maybe $3000 tops. 4 door or hatch. Reliability is a must.
I looked at a friends Focus that I posted a thread about not long ago, but it needed alot of work. Windshield, tires, clutch, LOTS of basic stuff. Looked at a few EK hatches, but most had high ks and needed body work due to the usual Honda rusty quarters. The good ones were gone within a day or so, but they do exist. Lots of overpriced "JDM" style ones though.
This weekend, Im looking at 2 different Subaru Imprezas. A 95 and a 97 that are both local to me. Ive read online that they a pretty solid cars. Both 4 door hatches and awd, whcu is perfect for my needs.
So, mid 90s Subarus....

The Imprezas are both 4 door hatches. My Si is like a clown car. With me driving, the back seats are useless. They are also AWD, which might make my winter drive to Cambridge and back much easier. Im considering a WRX as my next ride just for those reasons, but thats still in the future.
Ill give you $3000 for your car. Thats my budget.

The only thing about Subarus are the cost of parts and if it is over 10 years old, you will have to buy parts. Sometimes, you have to go to the dealer because jobber parts don't exist. Just ask Alvin (kon-yue).
When I went looking for a car this past summer, I too looked at EKs but in the end, I got a 2004 Si Sedan. If you want reliability, generally, newer is better...
I didn't want to deal with headaches of a 10 year old car...which I did with my previous car. My $2,000 Integra became a $5,000 car after all the repairs (and modifications)...
So, my advice is maybe fork out the extra money now, and maybe get xray's car or something similar.
A $3,000 car of any type will require work...and will likely end up as at $5,000 car... Also, if you decide to sell you "beater" after a couple of years, if it is "newer" and in good condition, you can make decent money on it but if it is, say 15 years old, value is much less...
If your budget is just $3,000. I may even suggest not bother with a beater for this year....
If you were a mechanic or had access to a shop and single, my suggestion would be completely different (I would suggest a $500 beater) but I think you are like me and would rather be enjoying your weekends off, spending time in the house rather than under a car....
I hope that makes sense.

MY SiR and his fine words of wisdom. Parts was the one thing Ive read about the Suby. Reliable yes, but expensive to fix. Id like to stick to a newer Honda, but the good ones dont last. I dont want to spend $6000 either. At least with a cheaper Honda, the parts are affordable and they are easy to fix.
LOL Ive seen that car around. Such a POS. The guy that drives it is a typical Hamilton dirtbag.

You know what just look around ask all your friends. That is how i have always found my cars. I have a 1995 old achivea great car now the winter beater runs like a clock got it from a friends grandfather. I also Have a 1998 coupe DX I got from my uncles neighboure for 2 grand needed a little work but ony had 120,000 kms on it. It is to hard to find cars from auto trader and that. ask or let everone you kow you are looking for a car for the winter i am sure you will find on somewhere. You might have to spend a day working on it but no biggie.

Hahaha. I think the wifey would like a bit more.
He can't afford it!
I'd say do what MY SiR suggest. Drive the Si for another winter and maybe by next year you'll be about to drop more than 3 Gs for a nice reliable beater.
