Insurance question...

If someone who had their own car and their own insurance policy were to get into an accident while driving someone else's car (that also had its own insurance policy), would the insurance rates for both drivers (the one that had the accident and the owner of the car that was involved in the accident) increase?

Usually the rates of the car owner go up, since the insurance follows the vehicle, not the driver .... and the company that insures the car would have to pay out ... BUT, if the driver of the car is charged for anything their insurance will likely go up as well, as it goes on their driving record ... But remember, if the driver and the vehicle are involved in an accident that they are held not at fault, neither insurance will go up ... Hope this helps

So if the driver of the car was at fault (in the eyes of the insurance company), but no charges were laid, then only the rates of the owner of the car will increase, and not those of the driver involved?

Why would your brothers insurance pay for your aunts vehicle? The insurance follows the vehicle, not the driver. The only way I can see this happening is if your aunt lives in the US. And why would your insurance pay for the other vehicle?? We have a Direct Compensation clause in the Ontario auto Insurance policy where everyone goes back to their own insurer for damages to their vehicle, regardless of fault.

And to answer your second question EL, yes that "could" happen .... but sometimes if the company who insurers the vehicle finds out that the driver has there own auto insurance they will notify them that the driver has been involved in an at fault accident... sometimes ....
