Question is engine swap / turbo set up LEGAL?

hey guys, i need some advise from experience people.

ok , i'm planning to either put turbo on my stock civic'97 or swapping with a built (LS) or stock B/H Series engine

The questions are:
1) can you do emission test with such upgrades(turbo)/ swap?

2) i heard if you do swap, the swap engine need to be newer year than my '97 stocks engine, and also need some paper. is this true?
is the paper means from usdm engine or jdm ?

3) if happen i'm selling the car in the future, can i pass the safety check?

4) how about insurance issue?

Thanks a million guys.

Not sure about your motor swap questions, but as for turbo, most turbo kits out there are CARB (California Air Resources Board) legal, meaning they should pass emissions no problem.

what do you mean by CARB, do you mean you have to buy the complete kit to be legal. or you can have a home made turbo set up?

1) Yes you should be able to pass emissions same reason as EL_ Sport

2) Not sure

3) Safety check doesn't really check all parts of ther car only lights, brakes, tires, and such not issues regarding where engine came from etc...

4)Insurance will cover you for it if it is legal and you tell them about it, but if you tell them about it be prepared to pay more thatn you are paying now.

As long as you swap in a higher HP motor you should tell your insurance company..

If you get into an accident with the swapped motor insurance has a right to refuse your claim because you did not inform them of the swap..

Rules are different for different insurer's..

Call your insurance company..

Pretend to be someone else..

Start playing "What if" with the agent.

What I mean is that alot of the complete turbo/sc kits out there are CARB legal (emissions legal in California). Kits such as Greddy, Jackson Racing, etc. California has some of the strictest emissions laws in N. America, so if the kit is legal there, you should have no problems with emissions testing here in Ontario.

Answer to your #2 is NO. The engine does not have to be newer or same year as your car that's an old wives tale and if the car is JDM then there are no "papers" you only get a reciept from whereever or whomever you bought it from.

not really because if a cop looks up the serial numbers and it's stolen then they might take the block and investigate the shop as well (although you can say with the reciept I didn't know

But you got to notify the insurance and give them identification and your screwed...

If a cop catches you

It goes

Victim
"My shop did it for me..."

Shop
"My Supplier got it for me"

Supplier
"My warehouse sent out a batch"

... etc

I'm sure someone can shed some more light on this and I wouldn't recommend ANYONE using a stolen motor but from what I understand if the motor is a JDM motor there is NO WAY to track whether it's stolen or not.

I don't think they are gonna call Japan and ask if so and so motor is stolen.

Not worth having a stolen motor , cops have been doing spot checks and looking under hood for vin## etc. , then i see cars being towed away- seized -

Also a JDM motor comes with a vin , and yes you can check them
