Do insurance companies inspect your vehicle?

Do insurance companies inspect your vehicle?
OK, my insurance policy will be ending this december and its time for renewal. I just received my family's renewal thing from Liberty Mutual and they just DOUBLED my premiums....WTF??? I have two vehicles in my household, my parents car and mine. My parents car is under my father and my car is under my mother. I am only an occasional driver, but I don't understand why my premiums have gone from 800 to 1700 a year??? Any ideas anyone? So we're like paying a total of 4500 this year instead of 3600 last year. This is messed up stuff. So, we plan on changing companies, does the new insurance company check your car?? like take photos or inspect it? I know my car ain't exactly 'modded' but I don't need them making up some excuse to rip me off some more. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Some companies do inspections and some don't. For example, I just changed insurance companies last month. I didn't have to go for any inspection, but my mom also changed to a different company and she had to go for an inspection. Its kind of ironic, seeing as how my car is modded and hers is not.

I know that when they inspect cars they take pictures and it's only a visual inspection. I had to do it twise 'cause I changed the car, but it was with the same ins. company.
Do some companies actually require a full inspection of the car ?
i.e. pop the hood and check for mods ?
would they only do that for cars that look modified?
I am thinking of doing a swap and a some bolt-ons, but don't wanna get screwd on the inspection.
thanx.

Well I'm not an insurance broker or agent but I do know that if you have full coverage you would have to take a picture of your car. But if you have only liability coverage than you will not need to have your car photo taken. I know this because i only have 1-way coverage on my vehcile and my dad has 2-way and he went to take his photo the other day. And even our previous ins. company didn't take picture. As long as your car is covered 2-way they want to see how the car looks, but they do not check the hood, they just want to varify that they are not being scamed when your car gets into an accident. -> Please correct me if i'm wrong, but tha'ts from my experience.

Just to correct my earlier post. I just had to take my car for an inspection (pictures) over this past weekend. In talking with the girl that did the inspection, I found that all insurance companies must by law do an inspection of your car if you are changing insurance companies or buying another car (used). The only time you do not have to do an inspection is if you buy a brand new car. So if your car is visibly modified, you might want to think twice about changing insurance companies. I have mods on my car, but nothing that is really visible, so I was okay.

if i remeber correctly ( very doubtful ), they could deny coverage if the car was involved in any mishap ( i hope not )

yes dave - cars that are 10 years or less in age must have a free visual inspection done - i believe its actually a provincial law - they are really only looking for damage to the car ie dents, cracked windshields etc and signage on the car - ie is someone using the car as a taxi or pizza delivery vehicle. you can modify a car - the risk you take is that the mods u do will exceed the limit that the ins co will provide in the event of a loss ie you spend $5000 souping up your car - it gets stolen - you provide the reciepts for the work - the ins co gives you the average value for the year and model of your car along with money for your improvements up to their limit which i think (dont quote me on this is i think $2500 at certas) beyond that you really should have the whole car appraised and have collector car insurance on it.
for your second question yes we do ask what your current/previous ins co and policy number is. you get a better rate if you have had ins before btw. what we also need to check is that you havent had more accidents or tickets than we can insure under our guidelines - in our case a total of one at fault and one ticket is the max - beyond that you need to get insurance with one of the few companies that do high risk drivers which is called the facility market.
i do get a discount although quite frankly i get a better deal through a group insurer because i am a university graduate and the price they arranged for the group is less. u should check with your school - college, university or whatever group you may belong to to see if you can get a better rate.
hope this helps
