there is no such thing as an average count on actuations of the shutter...some people use it alot, some people are snap happy, some people plan out and take few shots...but most are rated to go on for around 10k before service may be needed...6k does sound excessive though for a not too old camera...buy a new one or a refurb you cheap bastage
cheap? lol yea cuz $700 is pocket change right? haha

there is no harm in getting a refurbished one provided it is decently discounted vs. a new one plus....it comes with atleast 6 months warranty or so.
you can find...i dont know around 5-6 xt/xti users right here so thats direct feedback (myself, xenin, xray, username, phuviano, millcivic) and you can take a look at their pics. if you see comparative reviews, you will also see that even at the entry level, xt and xti have been hugely popular mainly due to their ease of use, good amount of features, noise control, colors etc.
when in doubt about a certain brand, just follow the popular opinion.

I totally agree with Sal on this one. We sell refurbished cameras that come with 1yr warranty and are nicely priced. I would never buy a new one when I have the option of a refurb. that's cheaper and comes with warranty.

No, you can't use the LCD for "Live View" like a point and shoot. You have to use the viewfinder.
On the left side of the flash, there is a small button with a lightning bolt icon, when the camera is on, and not in full auto, push it and the flash will pop up. Always use P, TV, AV, or M. The other settings are useless! :P
Check out Henrys for a great class for beginners (go with the 2nd level though)
