Newbie needs help

Hey guys need help, been lurking but never posted. my engine is about to go. i like the car but i want a new car eventually, don't want to spend too much.
its a 98 dx hatch 5 speed. non vetec. under 1500 preferably. could i go vtec?

Sure you can

A d16y8 engine ( vtec engine , si model) goes for under 500 with tranny included and all the linkage (sometimes even the ecu) ... Plus labour , depending on the shop it should be between 500-1000 $ ...( you should go to someone with experience , he may even charge less since he is so used to doing it)

Therefore 1500 is more than enough

as per shop recomendation , hivelocity seems to be the place that knows hondas inside out but you could check the other vendors too

welcome to tcc, you can definately get a d16y8 and tranny (full swap) i believe from torontojdm or jdm engineland

one more question, if i was to go d16y8 would i also need the tranny or can i just keep mine

it would be better to get the tranny

The d16y7 i believe has longer gears compare to the d16y8... If you really want to see the improvement then change the tranny

Its not like the tranny cost a lot of money , i actually seen it go for under 100 and most of the people selling a d16y8 swap will include the transmission with it

I wouldnt cheap out and keep my old tranny, may as well do it right the first time
