This morning when I started my car I noticed a very loud noise coming from the back end of my car that I could only hear for a few minutes then it stopped. It kind of sounded like a muffler of a muscle car but not as loud, so I turned the car off and tried to take a look under the car to see if there was anything that looked weird and nothing. So I started the car again and heard the noise again and then it stopped. So I didn't hear it for about 5 minutes as I was driving and then while I was stopped at a light and was starting to move I heard it again and my foot was all the way down on the clutch. It is not the ABS, that I am sure of cause the sound was like nothing I had heard before and I have heard my ABS many times.

Does anyone have any ideas I am totally clueless as to what it could be?

Did you only hear it when stoped?
Your car is under waranty right? Bring it in to the dealer.

Yah .....the car was stopped when I heard the noise, but the second time I was was moving..

Take it to the dealer, let him worry about it. Make sure you get a free rental if they have to keep the car.

The only thing moving when your car is stopped is your engine.

It could be some exhaust pipe gasket or some heat shield.

But from what you have described, sounds like you have a hole on your muffler.

Just a wild guess. You never know what happen till further investigation.

I bought the car used and I am at 56K It is a 99. If I bring it to the dealer I am just afraid that they might do something to cause a problem so that if is it is under warranty they can get money from Honda to fix it or do something that I have no choice but to pay and fix it, as they have told my boyfriends brother who has a 93 civic, they told him that he needed to do all this **** to his car and he really did not.

I usually go to North Markham Honda for Oil changes but I do not trust them for any service. I have heard too many issues about dealerships screwing things up so that they get warranty money from Honda Canada.

What should I do? Maybe I will get it checked out at a private mecanic any suggestions???

Take it to Midas.....free inspection......Don't let them push you into doing any repiar.......
Pretend your on the phone, (wait until the car is on the hoist when you do this)..... then when they tell you what's wrong, and they let you know the estimate, just tell them that your mom just called, and that she is locked out of the house and you have to go. Promise that you'll come back later in the day (if you go there before they close..ie...1-2 hours before) then tell them you'll be back tomorrow. Then take the info and run. hehehehehe

Any idea how much it would cost to fix a hole in the exhaust, if this is what the problem is then I want to hold off on tints until I know how much I would have to pay

Depending what part has the hole.....any where from $30+labour to $400.
If it's still the OEM muffler, they will have to replace the whole thing(that's what Honda would want you to do)BUT IS NOT NESSESARY! They can cut out the bad part (depends what it is), and clamp in a replacement section without haveing to replace the whole thing.
Take it to Midas, then Speedy, and if you have time. a Honda Dealer, (not as expensive as you think.)
If they are all too expensive for you, look into getting an aftermarket exhast or muffler, or both.
Remember, if you take it to one of the above places, you will get a liftime waranty on the muffler, but not the labour.
If you go aftermarket, no waraanty on parts (in most cases), and none on labour.:working:

Take a look at the rear of the car while someone is in the car idling the engine. That should give you a better idea of where the sound is coming from. Like PULOVER said take it to Midas, they give free estimates. Make sure to watch the guy inspecting your car or if they allow you to go into the shop with them.

Just called my friend that works at a Honda dealer. He said the original muffler is not covered under waranty, but if you get an original one put back on by Honda, then you will have a lifetime waranty on it. (you just have to pay for labour if you want to get it fixed in the future) about 1/2 hour.
Give Richmond Hill Honda a shout. They have a peformance one for sale..$140 installed + enviroment crap fee. If you take the old one with you, you might not have to pay for that enviroment fee.

a new muffler isn't too expensive

if the problem is caused by a broken gasket. it's even cheaper like $10. I had the similar problem b4, and it was caused by a broken gasket and I replaced it by myself since the labour is soooooo expensive something like $80/hr anywhere.

Oil chnage at North Markham honda is too expensive, it's $34 something

Sisley Honda is only $26 something

Just a though, I get the same problem sometimes too. But I have an aftermarket muffler. If you have one too, then check how much room the muffler has around the bumper cutout, if there isn't much then chances are, on a cold start the muffler might shake more than usual and create a high frequency low banging noise, which sounds weird. I wouldn't worry about it if that's it.

It could be a broken or loose heatshield.

Well looks like the tip I put on my car in the summer rusted so bad that it came loose and that is why I only heard the noise when I started the car. Until my boyfriend heard the noise did he realize the problem was the tip that I had put on a while back. Well thanks for all the help and hopefully that will be the last of the noise......
