Hearing VTEC?
Hey guys, im in the process on purchasing a new one.
I test drove it, drove really nice. Push it a bit but i realised that i did not hear the vtec kick in at 5.5, is this normal?
It was a 2000 SI, im about to go see another one tomorow, a 98 vtec (the dealer claims), what should i look for? am i supose to hear it? if i dont is it a bad sign?
Let me know your input!
Thanks guys!

Dude, despite what ANYONE may tell you your not going to here the VTEC crossover point on a stock or even lightly modded D series motor. The bigger the motor gets, IE B16, B18, K20, etc the more your gonna here it. If your not sure if the car you are in is equipped with VTEC or not then simply pop the hood and look for the solenoid near the distributor.

ah ok i c!
well to be honest, even if i were to look, i dont know what i would be looking for.
My probleme here is that i never bought a vehicle from a delerchip, and god knows the rumors that roll: they may have rolled back, vtec non existant/not "plugged", etc etc
what "should" i look for, or better yet, how can i be sure of my purchase, i mean yes these 2 cars im going to see tomorow are impecable cars, no rust what so ever, hyper clean, about 170 clicks on...
what do you suggest?
thanks for the re btw
edit: oh ok, so then regarding vtec, does it affect the engine behavior? or is there no diference between this 98 vtec and 98 non vtec? stock engine obviously.

If it's a 2000 Si (not SIR) then you probably wont be hearing (or feeling for that matter) the vtec engage. Its the SOHC economy d16y8 engine. I have one. You can hear it somewhat, its like a high pitch sound but thats about it. The d16 isnt a bad engine but if you can afford it, go for the 2000 SIR.

u will NOT hear the change over like u do on a DOHC VTEC!!! and if all u want is MaD tYtE Vt3cH on ur 125hp motor.....its sad!!!!!!!
no matter how loud the VTEC is the car is a SI = slow(as hell), just buy the car to enjoy it and save some gas! the vtec sound is not gunna intimated/impress anyone anyways.

i wasnt saying there is a comparison in vtec sound between a sohc and dohc because there is a big difference. i was just saying that u can hear it on a sohc because Thrill_House said u couldnt plain and simple, i was just correcting his inaccuracy

With EK's the engine code is on the timing belt cover.
D16Y7 - 1.6L, SOHC, 106HP
D16Y8 - 1.6L, SOHC VTEC, 127 HP
B16 - 1.6L, DOHC VTEC, 160 HP
I've driven all three and the VTEC crossover is the most noticeable on the DOHC models.
