What parts stay in the car in a motor swap?

Sorry if this is a stupid questionk, but I coudln't find any answers when I searched.

I have a dead EG hatch that I will do a swap with in the summer but when I'm bored I like to go mess with it.

So I want to start cleaning up the engine bay for the swap and just start throwing stuff out or putting it away for later use.

I need to know what is *staying* in the car when a swap is usually done and what I can remove.

I pulled off the intake and I'm gonna throw it away, gonna take off the alternator and keep it, same with o2, distributor and other things I may need later....what about the rad , etc ? Should I take off the headers and stuff or leave everything intact? power steering pump ? I would assume the brake master cylinder and such stay on the car, so I will leave those and give the car a brake job..

Also, anyone have a DIY link to bumper removal ? I coudln't seem to figure it out.

Thanks for the help.

Well, That is a good question, however we cannot answer without you telling us which motor you are planning to swap back in...

Oh right, heh..

I have a non-vtec from the 93 and I'm 90% sure I will just put the same year motor but a vtec, so I believe the code is the d16z6. Failing that I'll just put the stock non vtec (I believe d15b7?) motor there.

I'm not building the motor up at all. This civic will just be a daily driver, I do not care much about performance.. I will just make it look a little nicer and lower it.

Do you think that motor is a good choice? The only thing that worries me is the age, I really want it to last so I'm hoping I can find a decent low milage one for <1000.

Or do you think I should put another one in? Budget is 1500 max though because, like I said this will jsut be a daily that will save me gas so nothing performance is necessary.

JDM D15B with LSD FTMFW!!!

what stays in? ... that depends on what you wanna keep? wanna keep A/C, PS, ABS if equipped?, and so on... you have to decide for yourself what you want in the car.

brake lines, master cyl (clutch and brake) stay... everything else can be moved/removed. tuck the wiring away, clean up the bay and paint it... then swap away.

to take of the front bumper, like on my ej1, u need to pop hood, unscrew the 5 bolts on top be careful they will be corroded and can get rounded easily, and are usually on real tight, check underneathe a few bolts under there to hold a flap down, and 1 screw in each rear well in the front fender area, slip ur screw driver into the mud guards and u will find it

tip there is a cut groove in the fender lip to help u use ur screwdriver to get up in there

vadim.. for bumper removal its simple. Screws where the bumper meets the fender (1 on each side) there should be like 2 screws or bolt underneather the bumper. Then on the top of the bumper there are several fasteners.

and I wouldn't bother doing a tuck, if its a daily driver, it'll make it more of a pain to diagnosis problems.

As for what you should pull out before the swap, just hit me up on msn next time you see me, and ask me. I'm too lazy to type it out now

thanks for the help everyone but I'm having trouble with those screws at the top. They are really dirty and the metal seems to be very soft and they are stuck and I can't turn them. When I try to they feel like they will strip. Any way around them?

nope not really i tried eeverything, i eventually bought a gra-Bit and drilled and then undid them. at the stage when i put them back and all jus dont screw them crazy tight, i can now screw and unscrew regularly as they were really siezed and tight at first. this is the only option i found to be effective in this case.

drill them out like a man

it's not the first nor the last time you'll have to drill bolts out, so might as well get some practice.

I know, but Honda would have made my life 1000 times easier if they just put those screws that you can take off with a ratchet

they use plastic clips on the next gen, so I imagine they noted the problem and fixed it. that's why honda rocks, they learn from their mistakes, not repeat the perpetually (except the damn quarter panel rust)
