Strange grinding type noise

Hey all, got a weird issue on the wife's 2000 Civic that just started happening couple days ago.

Around 2000rpm, there's a noise coming from the engine bay, sounds like a metal grinding noise. It only happens around the 2000rpm mark during acceleration and deceleration. There's no other anomaly of any kind - everything seems to be working fine except for the noise. No smoke, abnormal behaviour or anything else. And once past 2000rpm (up or down), no noise.

She doesn't recall hitting anything or going over any rough bumps, etc.

The car has just over 110,000km and has been meticulously maintained.

We'll be taking it in to a shop during the week to get it checked out, but I'd like to know if there's something obvious we've missed or anything specific that could be causing this noise.

I'd appreciate any help or input.

Thanks!

5spd.

Along that line, doesn't matter what gear is engaged - noise is still there around 2000rpm. Even in neutral.

Is it a rattling almost?

Timing belt may have a rib or two missing. Im not sure you have to describe the noise a little bit more in detail

I wanted to say check your heat-sheild but... if its only at 2000rpm i wouldnt think that would be the case.

I guess it could sound like a rattle... but it more closely resembles a grinding / vibrating noise.

Any idea how to fix it?

Does it need to be replaced?

LOL I see... I prefer to replace it to be honest, if it is in fact the heat shield.

How can I figure out which one it is? The noise only happens when the car is running at 2000rpm.

I'd take it to a mechanic.

It is most likely the heat shield under the shifter.

Like many suggestd, get it checked. It is highly possible that is the case.
