Smoke, How Come??

I just wanted to know why do older cars smoke when you step on the gas? What could be wrong? My friends 1990 integra still works the same since I knew he had the car, still has the same power, but now when he steps on the gas it smokes, can anyone help him out? Anyone know the problem?

I could be wrong here but it's usually an indicator of transmission fluid being leaked into the engine and being burned. Also if it is a pale blue/white smoke it's oil.

Well if the mechanic is honest then yeah I'm sure he will tell you the truth. I'm sure more experienced people on this board can help you out.

unless yer tranny (auto) is leaking into the rad and yer rad in turn is leaking into yer engine (heads)..

i'm pretty sure the smoke is white, but his oil is also going down. What would he need to fix this problem. I would say his engine is !@#$ed up but it still has power.

you've got at best a blown head gasket. at worst a cracked cylinder. either way if it's a '90 teg consider a rebuild if he plans on keeping the car for several more years.

so then basically his engine is messed up if he need a rebuild right? I was thinking Because it still has it's normal power I thought it would just be something small but I guess I'm wrong.

something small can lead to something really expensive.

blue = oil,
black = rich gas/incomplete burn
white = water

neither of which is a good indication. 1st of all find out what colour smoke it is, and how it smells. Then, check compression wet and dry.
