Power Steering

I would like to add Power steering into my 89 DX, was wondering on how much this would set me back, and how i should go about doing it. Driving without it is such a pain especially reverse parking. Could I pick these parts up from a junkyard.

you could get all the parts form a junk yard but, i think you would have great difficulty taking the lines out of a car without breaking them. When i removed my power steering i noticed that the lines were very corroded. There was no way i could have taken them out and reused them. Why do you even want power steering? I don't even notice the lack of it, i palm the wheel once again now even though there is no power. IMO you should just gain some muscle because it wouldn;t be worth the hassle. But if you do decide to do this I have rack and pump at my parents just north of burlington id sell really cheap.

I like rack 'n' pinon the most, my ef is awesome.. but no ps in a ps equipped car = hell in the city.

trying to take a left hand turn palming the wheel while shifting can be a challenge sometimes, more effort than I'd like to exert. heh.

My mechanic told me that is a really bad thing to do, as it can damage your rack.... I would fix or change that asap!

I heard that too. And I do believe it is true.

You have to get a non p/s rack or something like that.

I've just read that too.
Cuz the racks on Hondas aren't lubricated internally, they are lubed by the PS fluid.

Read it here:
http://hondatuningmagazine.com/tech/0510ht_steer/

Quote from the article:
"In a DC Integra and an EG Civic, the power steering racks are lubricated by the power steering fluid itself. Simply pulling out the power steering pump, belt, and lines leaves the rack unlubricated and vulnerable to premature wear and locking up."

Locking up?? Yikes!!

I wonder if EK Civics are the same as DC/EG?

The space is tight and I am frustrated to even think about doing this project. How difficult is it to change the PS rack to a Non PS rack? I had the chance to buy a Non PS one but I turned it down, cause I had to devote money to tires. But if I but the conversion kit, it will end up probably be the same amount...

Any insight on this as to labour cost and level of difficulty? Change the rack or re-route the lines?

I checked into this few years ago with my 90 HB. The SOHC ZC engine I got from luckystar had a power steering pump and I figured hey why not. I ended up not doing it because I low on $$ at the time.

Power Steering rack. $100
Pump $XX?? I couldn't even give mine away.
Lines? New or hopefully good ones from the yard.
I heard you also need a new cross_member? I'm not 100% sure on that one.

Changing the rack involves replacing the front crossmember. Not the easiest thing to do but not that hard either. As for re-routing the lines Im not sure what that does or how to do it.
