noisy engine

94 hatch bought new and still have it today run good and quiet at 175000...recently bought a 93 del sol with the same engine as the hatch 1.5 and 184000 but this engine runs noisy, still runs good...but noisy. Prolly was driven hard!!! It's got new plugs, wires, dist. and rotor, fuel and air filter. Wonder if "engine restore" would quiet it down a bit or a valve adj. would be in order? Maybe theres something else wrong with the thing? THX

You probably need a...

valve adjustment, and / or timing adjustment - or new timing belt change

valve ticking sounds??

maybe the belt snaped once and bent the valve a lil... a lot's possible, unlikely but possible.. probably just need valve and timing adjustments..

The kind of noise that's popupar with high mileage engine. I really notice a differance from my hatch! The Sol's got a new timing belt!

that's what I tell ppl, cars that ran hard have noisy motors... that's how you can tell. tolerences in the motor get fuct so the whole thing starts to sound harsh. I would recommend starting with a valve adjustment. then, try using the high mileage formula oil from Quaker State. Besides that, short of blueprinting the block, I'd leave it at that until you get a major reason to rebuild.

I though Del sols all came with the D16Z6, and alternatively with the B16A3?

The Del Sol S had 1.5 in them...same as the hatch cx...good reliable engines good on gas and still snappy, I find! Not as much as the VTECH...but still snappy!

haha, look at that, they DID come with 102 hp 1.5Ls... if the valves ARE bent, then you can look forward to a mini-me swap

you take your 1.5 head, intake, throttle body, ECU... throw it in the garbage... you obtain a D16Z6 head, intake, throttle body, VTEC solenoid, and ECU... and you install THAT. Now, you have a mildly high compression VTEC engine that can make about 130 hp, and maybe more with some other mods.

Will the 1.6 litre head and stuff bolt-on directly to the 1.5 litre block?

yeah, red90dx did a pretty detailed parts list, and PrOcIvIC just did his mini-me swap... most of the stuff just bolts right on as long as you got the right parts. Just gotta add wire I think to your harness - for the VTEC switch.
