My rpm's are weird....

Hi all,

It started doing this at the end of winter so I just thought it was because of the cold. But it is still doing it. In the winter I used to start my car and I could hear a belt sqeuling. Some have told me it could be my alternator belt. So no that it's warm when i start my car it doesn't really make any noise but my rpm's are high. Almost like my choke won't come off. It's last for a few minutes then it drops down to normal level. My rpm's are at like 1.5 - 1.7. even if I press the gas for a bit it doesn't come down. Now I don't know if this is related but i find i have no power in my lower rpm's in second. I can kind of feel a few jerks like it's trying to sustain a equal level of power but looses it for a split second gear. I feel like 2-3 little jerks. I need a tune up, I know that but a little insight as to what it might be would be good before I go see Joe and Altech. Coudl it be the timing of my engine, fuel injectors or my clutch needs adjustment? I drive stick if that makes a difference.

Thanks for the help all

P.S. How is Joe with guys who doesn't know much about cars but still wants great service at a great price? IE: Me!!

distributors probably messed. Same prob with my car, took it to Joe at Altech. Fixed it like a week or two ago. Had my distributor rebuilt, but seems like the problem is back, so he's gonna fix it for me this week.

maybe a little off topic, but it has to do with RPM's... I've never owned Honda b4, and I just picked up my car a couple weeks ago.. I noticed that it revs pretty high.. like for instance, on the hwy it's already passed 3000 when I'm going approx 95km/h

by the time I hit 120 it's at 4...

I drove an impreza b4 and it was a good 500-750 lower at these speeds.. I'm assuming this is normal for Honda's?

Short gears on the tranny will do that. Quite normal for an SIR.

interesting.. well it helps for power for sure... I guess a short shifter would make things even better.. I was worried about milage at first, but the SiR is still a hella better than my Impreza even at the high revs

Jugz was referring to short gears, not a short shifter.
However, a short (gear) shifter will make it easier for you to go from 1st to 2nd, etc...

I usually shift mine around 3-4000 rpm's unless I'm passing someone.

It's a 1.6L you have nothign to worry about. The '99-'00 SiR's need the short gears cuz they have no torque.

yes, I know.. I was just saying a short shifter would make the shifting a lot quicker..

I try and shift b4 3000rpm as well.. especially now cuz I'm still breaking in the engine...

breakin in the engine? Hmm...I read this post on Honda tech about how some guy visited the ports where cars are offloaded from the ships and his experience he saw with the cars being offloaded? VRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMMM

what he saw was cars being shifted at redline through every gear and these are spanking new cars just loading out of the ships!

now if breaking in the motor is actually useful, then...I wonder what's the point in it, when they rip through each gear when it's got only 5km on thing when it's right off the boat

abused cars

My buddie worked at a new car dealership in Toronto. His job was to remove plastic, wash and move the cars around. These were all brand new cars with 0-10 kilometers on them.

The peelouts and skids and stuff they did to the cars was unbelievable. One day when I went to visit him during the day, I almost wet my pants laughing at how stupid the whole thing was. Burnt rubber smell everywhere. Neutral drops. Clutchless shifting. Reving to cutoff and keeping it there. Reverse to 1st... etc

So stupid.

I can't believe this happens!

Engines come broken in from factory.

The recommended break-in is just for precautionary measures. If nothing goes wrong during the 1st 5-10k the motor should be good for another 200k if well maintained.

well.. what can I do right?.. maybe I'm lucky and got some old guy to unload my car and he's not into peeling out and shiet like that... lol

but I do it just for the sake of doing it... my "breaking in" period is now over... time for my own peelouts

so when the sales guys tell you not to break 3000RPM through the first 1000k and not to go at constant speed, they're basically setting you up if any future repairs need to be done?..

like it's OUR fault b/c we didn't "break in" the engine???

Well back to the topic of MY thread, how much does the distributor cost to get fixed?? I hear clanking noise under my car every once in a blue moon for a few seconds, is that related?

the clanking sound is an exhaust heat shield.

Check for a sticky throttle cable...

put your toe under the throttle pedal and pull back and see if your RPMs drop
