you can remove the two hoses that go into the heater core, then take a hose and spray water through it.
You sure the temperature selector is actually openning up the hose to allow coolant to get into the heater core? You should see the cable moving back and forth as you adjust the temperature selector.
If spray doesn't work, you'll need to bring down your whole heater core and open it up.
By the way, don't just pull the hoses off, you'll need to drain all the coolant from the rad first otherwise you'll have coolant spraying all over the place.
