If i recall, it has to do with turbo lag or what not.. go watch Initial D, they explain it in one of the episodes and im too lazy to google it.

Bang-bang (also known as ALS which stands for Anti-Lag System or a misfiring system) is an engine management technique that allows to minimize the turbo lag time.

http://www.rallycars.com/Cars/bangbang.html

lol this was something someone else posted on another forum i am on..

"When off throttle and over a certain RPM, they are programmed to
dump a lot
of extra fuel and retard the hell out of the timing. This makes big
explosions in the exhaust manifold and spools the turbo to make
boost when
you are off the throttle. Instant boost all the time. Some systems
also use
fresh air injected into the exhaust manifold to help get things
exploding.
The 1G FWD we ran at Pikes Peak in 96 would make 6 psi in the
manifold at
idle. Sounds like ***, kills turbos and exhaust manifolds and makes
it very
disconcerting to lift off the throttle and have the car still
accelerate.

We'll be all standing on the side of a rally stage and a car will
go by with
anti-lag... half of the spectators will comment on the poor guy,
his car is
running so bad. The other half get wood and start thinking about
ways to
make air injection holes in their exhaust manifolds on their street
cars."

It makes the car look and sound like its backfiring, its mainly only used in Rally cars, and to sum it all up, allows you to have virtually no turbo lag, you get boost even with your foot off the pedal.. however the uneven timings can apparantly f*k up your engine in a street car.

Your probably gonna be replacing your turbo system and exhaust manifold and maybe even the engine every 500km or so... I don't think it would be an amazing thing to have unless its a rally or downhill racecar that has a turbo.. for a street car, im not sure its an amazing thing.

No, it is for forced induction only. To see this stuff in action, or play with it, get the demo to Microsoft's Rallisport, in the demo, the 2 cars you can drive have it, you can see the what looks like muzzle flashes and hear the god awful annoying pop pop pop bang bang pop.. everytime your foot comes off the gas.

Think of it like this, when a turbo'd car slows down and comes to a stop, the turbo has delay for it to spin up again once the drivers starts to take off again.. the misfire system just injects fuel directly into the exhaust where it is ignited so that it keeps the turbo with enough pressure so that you have boost forever basically..
