Idleing Problem, Can Anyone Help Please??

Hi, I have a 98 Honda Accord Lx-G Manual. It starts up properly and It drives well on the road, the problem with the car is that when I put the gear into neutral to slow down at a stoplight while I brake, the car will die because the idler will go down to zero, (won't maintain that 1000 rpm on it's own). In order for the car not to die at a red light, I must give it gas constantly so it won't die on me.

Does anyone have any ideas what would be the problem that is causing my idler to go below 1000 rpm? Thankyou so much, any ideas would be great, thanks.

Does it die when the engine is cold? or when its at OT? or at all times?
Always happens? or every so often?
Any check engine lights?
Have you done a tune up lately?

Id start with that. and go from there...

will take a stab in the dark but there is a chance that it could be a vac leak in your brake booster.
i get the same thing but not soo bad. my rpms go down to 500'ish when braking but never actualy bothered checking it.

change your fuel filter, and use some injector cleaner. Try that first. The same thing happened to me, and found it was just my fuel filter.

a tune up is a good start also a motorvac will help as well and it could also be a problem with your fuel pump

man, you can really tell who knows how to troubleshoot and who just likes wasting everyones time, space and money when it comes down to it.......

honDuh has the right idea, we need more info to make a better prognosis.

Does the check engine light come on when you first turn your car on, then go out?? If no the bulb is out so fix that first, if yes....... give as much info as you can think. or better yet pay a qualified person to look at it.

^^yet another useless post. you really like to hear yourself type?

to the op. don't just try this and that. go through the things listed above like CEL and sure a tune up is never a bad idea if you've not done one in a while, plugs, filter and so on can all effect the performance of the engine but it could also be a vacuum leak like the brake booster martin mentioned or in any of the other vacuum lines. it could be air in the coolant causing the IAC to work improperly or even the IAC or FACV are not working properly. it could even be that your air filter is dirty.

my advice if you don't know how to do things like check for a vac leak, make friends with a gear head who does.

inexpensive ways to fix this is first, clean up your IACV and TB. then start fresh. Could be your ignition coil as well.

Sorry about the late reply, I was calling someone to find out the information, When the car starts up, a Check Engine Light comes on and stays on. When the car starts up it's rpm is around 1400 rpm, it runs fine, I do not have to give it gas or anything, It's usually later on when your driving on the road, and you come to a stop light, the rpm will drop below 1000rpm and will die if I don't give it gas to keep the rpm up. No the car hasn't done a tune up yet, But I will go check that out.

Thankyou, You guys been helpful
