How to care for your brakes

Hello all,

I know that not torqueing you wheel lug nuts to the same pressure will warp your rotors but does anyone know anything else to do or not to do to prevent rotor warp?

For instance is it a good idea to wash my rims right after i've come home from work? You know, all the steam that the rotors make when you spray water on them?

Makes me kinda nervous.

Well... the excessive steam coming from the rotors should be fine.. you're just actively cooling them rather than passively.

Actively == Water cooled. (spraying water)
Passively == Natural Air Flow cooled.

However... excessive heat.. like if you were to drive to a track and do many many laps (on one that twists and turns)... you'll probably see your brake pads smoking to oblivion! That's when you'll have to be worried about rotor warping. Heat (from friction) combined with pressure (from brake pads) can cause warping.

Lets them cool on their own, you'll actually find that you'll get less brake dust rust.

ANY rapid heating and cooling is stress

Thats why its a good idea to vacuum your car before you start washing at the coin-op, give your rims a chance to cool...

But some rims are pretty tough and take quite a beating...

Others... not so tough

You'll warp the rotors if you spray them down while they're hot.

JSK.. rims or do you mean rotors?

When I trade in my civic one day for a BMW M3.. those rotors can take a real beating.

M3 can stop from 100 km to 0 km in 2.5 seconds. They have rotors about the size of my rims. lol It's disgusting. They're also very well engineered rims so they allow a lot of ventilation. Normal cars would have their brake pads smoking to hell before the M3 has it's even sweating. lol

If you think the brakes on the M are amazing, you'll jizz your pants if you see what's on the Porsche GT2!

Read it baby!
