Honda Service - 1998 Honda Civic SI

here's what I need done to my car, according to my trusted mechanic:

- replacement of both tie-rod ends on the front wheels (left and right)
- replacement of current shock-absorbers (4)
- replacement of ball (bearing) joints (also front; left and right)

I'm getting charged $400 for labour and cost of parts.

is this a good price? Or can anyone recommend something/someone else?

If he's being honest with you $400 for parts and labour on new tie rods, ball joints and shocks all around is insanely cheap. To cheap to be true. Are you sure thats not just labour?

If its just labour, thats still not bad at all. Most places charge from 250-300 to put shocks in and another hour a side for balljoints. Your still doing pretty good. Its worth it if it needs to be done. You'll be amazed at how good your car feels when its done.

plus the cost of parts (whatever that may be)

I'm just doing it because apparently, if I continue to drive my car in its current state, I could get in a serious accident if I don't get these things fixed.

hhmmm, if you really trust this guy, and YOU think they should be done, then its still a good price he's quoting you.

Look at it this way even at $250 for the shocks, assuming $65 an hour labour rate, so 1 hour each side for the b/joints and .5 a side for the tie rods. that still puts you at $445 give or take, and thats being gentle in T.O. Id say go for it, if your sure he's honest.

Does your car bounce and going to bounce after you hit a pothole or are on an un-even road? If not, your shocks are fine. Plus you'll need a new lca bushing and bolt x2, that'll cost ya another 50-70$ (assuming he goes oem)

does your car clunk when you turn the wheel or go over bumps?

Also do you know a mechanically inclined friend? Tell him to check out your bj's, tr's and shocks, its pretty easy to check. I know from experience mechanics try to list all the parts possible when a job comes in, even if they aren't really on the way out.

Good price for labour, but don't forget you'll need an alignment done after all of this. I just replace my inner and outer tie rod ends. I paid $180 for the parts taxes in at Honda, then I paid $250 cash for the alignment and install. Are those the upper or lower ball joints? My lowers were $50 a piece, my uppers were $100 a corner (but they are adjustable for camber). Shocks I have no experience in.
