Grinding when turning....

Hey everyone,

I searched the forum but couldn't mention of this specific problem so I'm just going to go ahead and ask.

I've got a 1992 Civic DX HB with 135, 000 KM on it; yesterday I was turning left and this kind of a repeated grinding noise kept happening. It wasn't constant, it was grinding on an off. As soon as I was straight it would stop. Today it wasn't making the noise until I hit a rough patch and then it was making the noise whenever I turned left again.

I checked my repair guide and it said either CV joint or driveaxle; what do you guys think? Any ideas on much would replacing this would cost?

Metallic grinding??

Perhaps snow in the wheel well rubbing tires....

ya, sounds like the outer cv's..
might as well just do the whole 1/2 shaft tho..
get it up on a hoist and you'll be able to tell pretty quickly which one it is..

I have to agree: it's most likely something to do with the drive axles or CV joints.

Angry

Does anyone have any idea on how much this will run me? Any suggestions on a place to get the work done?

Finally, is this part of the drivetrain? I've got an engine and drivetrain warrnanty on this sucker for the next 2000 kms and I'm not too sure if this is part of that.

Thanks for all of your help so far.

Well, it's worth checking with the warranty ppl, but it's a wear item that will fail depending on use...so even though it's a part of your drivetrain, it prob won't be covered under warranty. Just like brake pads and clutches. But it you got one of those Global Insurance Co. bumper to bumper extended warranty, then it's more of an insurance policy on your car breaking down, and then they may cover it (but you'll prob have to fight for it like a school girl )

I had the same problem a few years ago. I'm pretty sure it's your driveshaft/axles.

It definitely sounds like your driveshaft.. If anything.. I would suggest you take it back to see if they'll warranty it... Cause it is part of the drivetrain system, but who knows.. They might try to weasel their way out of it. I've seen that happen before for warranty claims.

If not.. You're looking at about $150 installed for rebuilt axles.

sounds like the cv shafts, you shouldn't let them go too far, i did cuz i didn't think anything of it and one ended up breaking on me on the highway so it's not fun, however it's very cheap for me to fix cuz i'm a mechanic, and can do it myself, if you need someone to do it, i can email me
