Grinding Stock Cam Shaft?

Currently my ride is 2001 civic lx, and I was at lim's place today and he told me about grinding the stock cam shaft. Lim use to be the owner at Optional. I did my manual swap there. He told me $500-$600 installed for grinding the stock cams but I don't want to use my stocks one's to do it, he told me I could get one new at honda, but I don't know the price yet. My motor is D17A1 and currently there's no cams out for this car. Is this way safe to do it? and do u guys have other shop that's more reasonable.
Thanks

why not put the money into other goodies until a cam is available...it won't be long if there are none out now. a cam gear (get ready for the cam), intake, exhuast, headers, ECU chipped, etc can be done in the meantime.

that way when you get a cam, its meant to do a certain job (stage 1, 2 ,3 etc) and you know what your getting. plus valves and valve springs may need to be upgraded too depending on the new cam lobes profile.

I have intake, header, exhaust and all the pulley's.
Ecu tuning where could i do that? And the motor has been out since 2001 but so far still nothing is out. that's why i was considering grinding the stock cams.

stop right there!!!!!

ok add up the money you've spent on bolt ons so far.

now consider you can have a K20A swap for about maybe $4000-5000. 6 speed and 200 hp stock. if you keep going with this motor, you're gonna spend $4000 anyways, bot won't see anywhere near the power gains you'd get from the swap. DO IT DO IT DO IT

You can get it done, I was looking into it, and a place called Colt Cams... I think its in BC can do it and they may have a custom one for your car already, or they could just make one for you. Look them up and give them a call. Second how did you find Lim's Install? He did my motor swap and quite frankily I would never ever take anything to that guy ever again. He was really lazy, didn't even do the swap right, it was messy, and I took it back several times and it still never ran correctly. Needless to say I ended up taking it somewhere else to cut my losses. That guy takes way too many short cuts... I'd double check the work he did. Guaranteed he probably left off a lot of bolts, and did cheap fixes to get certain things to work.

bbarbulo:for the k series motor I have look into that and it's way more than $4000-$5000 because for the 7thgen civic if I need to put the K series in my car I will need either the EP3 or RSX subframe so after everything come out it's gonna be at least $7000-$8000

Moe_Mentum: He did my transmission sway was alright nothing went wrong and it's been a year, Now my friend is doing the same thing there too, so where is this Colt Cams place at do you have more information on them. Thanks

with all those bolt-ons...wouldn't it be easier to turbo to 175-200fwhp? cams are another $500 right, ontop of I/E/H and cam gears....thats like $2000 right there with the new cams your thinking about...turbo the D17 to like whatsafe, say 7PSI and should be more powe then a K20 anyways...but no 6spd close ratio though

a K20 is what 165-170fwhp? D17 is probably 105-110? so you'd only need another 60whp so could probably do a turbo with no real turbo lag, so you'd get great acceleration/power

jeff at colt is a real cool guy. we have spoken many times and i have had b series cams done buy him and his work is excellent. is it worth it? thats something YOU need to figure out. you need to weight the cost vs power gain then decide if its what you want. you have the options in this thread. good luck on you choice.

I believe they are in British Columbia.. you'll have to have them send you new grinded cams or, you can send them your present ones to grind. (604) 856-3571 you can check their site. www.coltcams.com

No Old cam from a previous D-engine works for that motor? Is the head different? If all else fail's just get Nitrous. Im assuming if looking into a cam swap there's no worrie's of a warranty. And nitrous will give you alot mroe power for around the same money. Throw a 50 shot on with I/H/E and wait for a cam to come out
