i switched at 175,000kms
i know its late
but no leaks
(94 corolla)
a lot of people say dont switch late
b/c synthetic washes all the oil that seals the leaks and crack in ur engine
but i did it n e ways
and im fine

I switched at 180,000 kms on my 98 Si without problems. Now I'm running Mobil1 and not even a single drip of oil on my driveway at 193,000 kms. I assumed the previous owner used regular oil until the time I got the car at 170,000 kms. I didn't realize the advantages of synthetic till 10,000 kms later. For the improved fuel economy lone, I'd go with synthetic any day. Now I run it for 10,000 km between changes, with a filter change at 5,000 km. Next time I'm gonna put in either Motul or Amsoil.

If you're using synthetic, changing at 4-5k is a waste of money. 4-5k is really for dyno guts; synthetic is supposed to last till 30k. Before you think I'm nuts, check out this very informative article:
http://www.canadiandriver.com/articles/pb/synthetic.htm
I think it answers a lot of questions that people usually have. When I change my filter, I do lot some oil, but I top it off afterwards, so I don't end up changing all the oil which otherwise still performs well.
When I go Amsoil later, I'll be tempted to change the oil once 15k or even 20k. See the article and you'll know why.

hey there,
i switched to amsoil at about 160,000kms and i think it feels nice and smooth. you can check http://www.amsoil.com/frequent.htm for more info, although the funny thing is my milage has actually been less efficient. before i went from 450km a tank to 350 with amsoil. i dont know maybe im driving too hard?

I've been getting great milage with synthetic... around 550km per tank, 300km of which is highway driving. When I used regular oil before, I would get 450km near the end of the oil change cycle... but with synthetic, milage stays at 550km per tank through out.

i went to synthetic at like 220 000 kms... engine run way smoother and everything.... i'm at like 290 000 kms now and no problems.... its nice being able to forget about changing you oil... just get the long life filters and your set

OK, now what is the BEST syntetic oil for B-series engines (I don't think it matter what engine but still), and what kind of filter should you use. I am thinking of doing my oil changes at HONDA dealership.

Do the oil change yourself, then you can put in whatever you want! Amsoil is conclusded as the most cost-effective oil for your car from previous threads. Motul is another good one. Redline is even better but very expensive, so go with Amsoil. That's Bruno's favorite too!
