Post finished swap, starter problems..HELP

Just finished a b16a2 swap today in my car but we've run into a problem with the starter.

With the keys out of the ignition, when i hook up the battery the starter clicks like its about to engage...didnt notice it at first then some smoke started coming from the starter (because it had been trying to engage) so i unhooked the battery...made sure everything was ok..then hooked the battery up again, and it clicked again

what could be the problem? i just want to get my car started!
