engine trouble

I've been having problems with my eg hatch for about 3 months now and I can't seem to figure out the what is wrong with it. Here is the scenario:

you are driving/cruising (not racing or WOT) with your foot just into the gas pedal enough that you're keeping your speed constant (or slowly accel). Then all of a sudden the power stops, as if you have taken your foot off the gas (but you haven't).... if you take your foot off the gas then place it back the gas is responsive again... if you instead dig your foot deeper the car continues to slow down (so still as if you've taken your foot off the gas) then it feels like something "catches" and you take off. I found myself in rush hour traffic once (stop and go) and couldn't stop my car from stalling, because this problem also causes a rough idle... now here's another thing, it doesn't always happen. could be when engine's warm, cold, wet days, dry days, etc.

I did a gsr B18C swap end of last November so it's not the original engine, but had a trusted mechanic (and friend) who has done many swaps before perform the swap for me, so I know it was done well. I've got a CAI that I've had for a couple years; I at first thought maybe I got some water into the engine but now I doubt it because I drive carefully in the wet. The distributer is ok and good, got new plugs, new fuel pump, new fuel filter, I put good gas in (min 89 octane).

If anybody out there has had the same problem, or some ideas PLEASE let me know; it's starting to get really annoying.

Thanks

To me that sounds like an electrical system problem (fuel or ignition) rather than a mechanical one

First check all the chassis grounds on your car and check/clean the battery terminals and ensure that the wires are not corroded/non-existant.

Main grounds on your car should be:
1.Battery ground to bracket above transmission
2.Upper rad support to head/valvecover
3.Thermostat housing

Next thing I would check is your fuses and the supply/ground for your fuel pump. I also suggest getting a service manual for your car if you don't have one already such that your able to follow the electrical schematics.

Hope this helps and feel free to add/correct anything in my post.
Good luck.

it sounds to me like maybe the TPS or MAP are getting a false reading. I'd carefully test the car... how often does it happen?

do you get a CEL when it happens? if so what code? Do you get a CEL when the car primes the fuel pump?

I'd check TPS/MAP.
I've also seen this happen with an Idle valve (on an OBD2 car).

for an OBD1 car it takes quite a bit for the CEL to come on, so not having a CEL doesn't mean much to me. does the engine misfire or buck or anything like that? since it happens so often, I'd get a Snap-On reader and leave it hooked up and when it happens, check TPS and MAP readings...

Does the check engine light come on when you are starting the car, and you turn the key to the "ON" position before Starting?

yea, the clamp holding the hose onto the engine crapped out while I was driving and sprayed rad fuid everywhere... when I had a look it wasn't too noticeable in the engine bay though. I can't recall if it's only been happening since then tho.

Test your throttle position sensor (TPS)

should be giving you a gradual increase up to 5.0V as the throttle opens up.
