Engine problems?
When starting the engine from a cold start it would tick for about 2-3 mins before smoothing out, im guessing it because the oil is sitting on the bottem and as it warms up it pushes the oil towards the top? Either way I would like to know if thats normal. Oh and one more thing, my exhaust pipe is black, not grey. I know that means im running rich which would explain why my gas milage is ****, anyone know what could be causing this problem?
Other then that the car runs perfect, no boggin or backfires. Just want to get some answers on those to ease the mind.

if your actual exhaust pipe is black that doesnt mean your running rich.. if your smoke is black that means you are running really rich.
a good indicate of your car running rich is by reading the spark plugs or by listening for bogs/backfires, etc. Pull out the plugs.. if they are black and sudy(sp?) youa re running rich. Running rich can be caused be a few things, vacuum leaks, weak spark, timing off, bad o2 sensor. I'd recommend doing a tune up and if you have a friend at a shop tell him to hook up the scantool to diagnosis the o2(s)

thanks for the quick reply. Smoke from exhaust pipe is not visible, only on very cold days on a cold start, which then its grey in color.
How the engine ticking noise, it only happens on a cold start. If I let the car warm up it goes away. Could it be a sticky valve? if so how do I fix that?

I just changed my oil(300k ago) and I change it every 5000k. Car has about 160k now. I used Castrol Syntech 10w30 along with a fram sync filter. I have been reading both here and H-T how it could be my valves. After 50,000 miles the valves might need adjusting. It's very strange tho, after the car is warm the ticking noise is gone.

happens in my 96 sedan as well.
Car is at 130K now and never had a valve lash job done.
It will help a little bit if you put 5W30 in the car.
If you get the valve adjustment(lash) done, it will help quite a bit.
