engine knocking in the rain

I have an 02 ep3 and last year I had a CAI on it. I drove thru this big puddle this one day in the rain. The car did not shut off nor did anything abnormal from the engine. That was until I drove another kilometer and there came knocking sounds from the engine whenever I drove over 30km/h. I immediately went home and changed the engine oil. The car seemed to run fine after that except that since then, knocking sounds have been coming from my engine only when it rains. I know its from the engine because when I shut it off, the sound stop as the engine turns off. I have placed the stock airbox back as well and still the same thing. Now if anyone can give me guidance as to what the problem is, that would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Kevin

isn't your car still under warranty? if it is...slap back on the stock air box and take her in.that's weird that only makes the knocking noise when it rains...try running ur stock air box and see if it happens for starters.Who knows, the CAI is probably picking up water somehow or something else is wrong but that's first thing i'd do,besides there's rain in the forecast this upcoming week

It is but I'm nervous to bring it in because the CAI voids the warranty. Since I had to cut metal to fit the CAI, they may know I had one. Thats why I want to get advise here first.

piston slap you may have taken water into your oil pan thus removing the lubricant from the bearing this will cause big problems if you dont fix it.

Well is there a reason that the knocking only occurs in the rain? I have already placed the stock airbox back and it still makes the knocking in the rain.

I don't think piston slap has anything to with this.
Maybe you have your terminology wrong or something.
If it were to be piston slap you'd hear it either all the time (if it were real excessive) or more so when the engine is cold and the pistons have contracted and are smaller than the bore. It's also a pretty distinct sound too. Almost like a thin metal clanking sound.

i do not have my termino;igys wrong piston slap can be found at the top of the piston or at the bear cap and is normal to high mileage motors.
although i did nort relize it was only in the rain.
maybe your only hearing it in the rain but it is always there.
how many km's on the motor?
where do you live?

I'm 99.99% sure that its only in the rain. Its a very loud knocking sound that is as loud as the radio. I don't hear anything when its not raining. I have 43xxx km on engine. I'm in Hamilton and willing to drive distances if anyone can help me

piston slap is from excessive clearance between the piston skirt and the cylinder wall, noise from the bearing cap is called rod knock... very very different sounds... and usually very different occuring times, piston slap usually on cold starts, rod knock under load when its hot and the oil is thinned, as well sometime when cold and starting without any oil in the bearing surfaces.

how does a CAI void your warrenty? At toyota dealerships you can buy TRD cold air intakes included in the financing of your car that are fully supported by warrenty, so unless your honda has magical properties that the cold air intake allow to escape (i'm being very sarcastic here) the dealership ought to still cover anything, however if the damage was found to be caused by an aftermarket part, then it would void, so providing you don't go in there saying "i sucked water in my aftermarket intake and now it knocks" and instead say something like "My car has an unusual noise coming from the engine, almost like a knocking sound that is more prominent during rain" it would look a lot better on you.

hope i've been a lil helpful, tried to be at least
