?knocking while turning at slow speeds

Hey guys,

so sunday i was all pissed that I couldn't go to the show cuz i had to work so i decided to cheer myself up by upgrading brakes. I got Baer brakes with KVR pads , put them on no problem been working great, braking is much smoother now that i don't have warped rotors but now i've noticed a new problem..

i'm like 99% sure i put them on right i mean brakes aren't really that complicated, but u never know so i want to see what ppl think this problem might be.

When i'm in a parking lot or somewhere where i'm not driving fast and i'm turning i hear like a knocking/crunching sound from the front wheel (driver side i can't tell about the passenger side cuz that's too far away lol)

i did have to manipulate the passenger side rotor off ( by manipulate i mean help with a mallot ) i'm wondering if this might have contributed to this noise? or maybe something with my CV joints? i can't feel anything in the steering wheel or in the car itself i just hear it and it's driving me insane..

anyone have any ideas???

TIA

could be your cv joints, jack your car and take a look at the boots, look for tears and a big mess of grease

k well i donno if it really is warped rotors because the sound is getting louder and it's now more of a crunching sound... :S

has anyone EVER experienced something like this or heard of it?

and the weird part isn't only that it's crunching, it's that it doesn't happen while i'm braking, only when the brakes are NOT applied does it make any noise...

I had something similar. Only happened when the brakes were not applied. It turned out to be the metal dust shields rubbing against the rotors.

Alex, there is a plate that is behind the rotor. Check to see if that has been bent. It will make a scraping noise as you drive merilly along and will score up your surface of your rotors as well.

Damn - like minds think alike...

what could possibly bend something like that?

i'm gonna check that today when i get home from the office, cuz the sound is horrendous i turn heads when driving thru parking lots

some other things i found out on the internet are that it could be rotor run out either from deposits from the pads onto the rotor, or what bruno suggested that they were warped when i got them new from the store...

What makes me think it's something else is that it's gotten louder over the week...

if it is the dust shield, yeah just bend it back. I still suspect rotors though.... runout. could be from not cleaning the hub before installing, or like I said bad rotors. I've gotten enough bad NEW rotors to know... except mine were a fifth of the price lol (winter beaters and friends' cars)

When I changed my wheels in the spring I just bent them back. I'm sure because of the heat they are subjected to, they warp/bend over time.

Maybe your pads aren't fully releasing from the rotors and they are dragging causing the noise. Did you "bed" them, or whatever it's called?

oh and I don't think you'd be guilty of this, but check anyways, even the best of us make mistakes:

1. be sure the pad release springs (those stainless liners that are between the caliper and pad ears) are seated correctly, are not bent out of shape, and are lubricated with anti-seize.

2. check to see if the pads came with anti-noise shims or anti-noise compound. it's like a 'glue' that holds the pads to the caliper and piston so they don't rattle.

the 'crunching' you describe could be the release springs catching on the slots of the rotor.

so i finally figured it out...

you know the screws that hold the pad on the hub? when i was swapping the rotors i noticed that the heads were all chewed up and stuff but i figured they've been good for so long so what can change... well when i took my wheel off i saw that one of the heads sheered off for some reason and was just sitting there but not holding the rotor on the hub so it was wobbly as ****... not the best thing for a new rotor i know

I had to wait till my mom got home so i could use her car to go to CT get 4 new screws (only had flathead no phillps BOOO) and then reinstall the drivers side with the new screws and swap the screws on the passgener side god damn cheap honda parts just breaking for no reason lol i'm sure there is a reason but that was a waste of my evening

and now it drives like a charm! thanks for all ur help guys!!

btw it was scraping on the head shield, that's where the noise was coming from

bruno - the anti-seize for the pad release springs should it go on the inside where the pad makes contact? i just left it cuz i didn't find any on there...

next is a spirited drive to see how the brakes hold up cuz it's time for bedding and seasoning!!
