cold air intake.....

cold air intake.....
i'm planning to make a custom cold air intake from the ractive intake I currently have. My question is, when I see where I'm gonna extend it down to, I notice that it will be vulnerable to rain etc... Is this a major problem if my engine might me taking in water???

The end of my cai pipe is about 16" off the ground, and the filter extends a few inches below that. It's surrounded by alot of plastic and metal, fairly well protected from the elements. I think you would have to drive through a very deep puddle to submerge the filter, and ingest a large amout of water. Besides, if you did go through one that deep, the water would probably come into the interior under the doors.

definitely get the black fender liner in before you do the intake. without that you're either gonna get screwed with a) water or b) rock damage to the filter
with the fender liner in place you shouldnt be too concerned. i've had a CAI in my car for 3 years and no problems at all. just avoid the BIG puddles that will cause the filter to be completely submerged.

As for whether it is worth it or not, some like SRI, some like CAI. I didn't want to go through the trouble of a CAI hence, I settled for a SRI.
If you want to gain lost HP, use some fuel injection cleaner to cut down emission and stuff, it helps a little. An intake might net you a couple ponies, but don't take the manufacturer's numbers directly. You are not gonna gain like 10 or 15% and the intake is just one of the components of the overall package (car mod). Some said an intake will get more air hence you might consume more gas. I don't know about those people but it seems like my car uses about the same amount as before.
What makes an intake gain HP is really depend on the quality of the filter itself. That's why I bought a cheap tube and will replace the filter later on.

Doesn't really matter since your only using it to draw air from down under....most ppl use the duct pipe cuz its flexible....by all means use the rubber hose =) Whatever you find that works best....the K&N filter is whats giving you the higher flow.

I wen to home depot and asked for a 3" mandrel bent "U" pipe as an alternative for the duct, but they had no clue what I was talking about.. am i asking for right thing or is he just stupid??

LOL hes just stupid!!! I doubt you will find any mandrel bent piping in HD, perhaps try a muffler shop...even thats iffy. A mandrel bent is when they stick a cylinder shaped thingy w/ 2 ***** attached that can be flexed (mandrel) in the pipe before they bend it, so its a smooth exact diametre throughout the bend....thus flowing better as opposed to crush bends where you see ripples which deter flow.
What i recommended was to use your existing air box with a K&N drop-in. Take out the old pipe & resonator to run the duct pipe down. You can use hose clamps, string, plastic ties...to fasten it together.....crazy glue, hair spray, bubble gum, etc.

I no longer have my air box, I threw it out when i got the intake... but anyone know where I can get the mandrel pipe and how much??? I tired using the duct pipe with my filter but I don't like it....

??
Isn't it easier to just buy a used CAI? I t would look better, and less hassle. I'm all for DIY, but why with something like that?
Btw: How can a get rid of that hissing noise the intake makes? I had an SRI and it sounded much better, deeper sound.
also, why are most CAI pipes narrower than the SRI?
tanks.
