yea i know shoping springs dosent imporve **** but its for my budy he wants to do this on his 91 hach . do the springs have tention on them when the car is jacked up??? and how much should i shop how meny coils we want the car prity low but not draging . eny one have tips tricks or enything that can help me ???????

buy some damn lowering springs, cheap ones cost around $150 for that vehicle. As far as the tension, there is some tension when pulling them apart so take them to a garage and have them do it for you for a nominal fee.

dont cut ur springs, your car will ride like ****, my springs are cut and my car rides like ****, then my driver side spring just broke, had to replace them all. Its worth it just to buy some cheap coil overs like ^^^ that guy said.

Cheap coil-overs for 200 bucks will drop you 4 inches. alot better then cut springs. and im sure if you get pulled over and they find that you've cut your springs you'll get a ticket or the car towed.

and you will end up needing to pay a lot in the end to fix ur messed up suspension.
tell you friend to just save up cash, its better to do it right the first time around then riding like **** for a short time, then ****ing up, then having to spend $$ to fix it and buy new ****

ya don't cut'em, its not worth it. Not only will the stock shocks not handle cut springs, they won't handle lowered very long either, tell you friend to do it right.
if he still insists on cutting them, hey....not my car so go to er but know ahead its the half assed way to **** up your ride, get in trouble with the law (ERASE and programs like that target lowered cars, they've stated that on TV hundred times) and you still need an alignment when lowered, and if your friend can't afford $150 springs, I doubt he can afford $80 for an alignment...so he'll **** up his tires too.

While I agree with everyone saying not to chop the springs but I done it anyways and I disagree with why most people have said not to. BUT TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION,
Yes your ride quality suffers but I would prefer chopping off a coil than riding on one of those BS sleeved coilovers. The ride quality is not bad until you start getting greedy and cutting more than you should.
Your shocks do not blow faster with cut springs than lowering springs or coilovers, if you only go a little lower. you'll put the same stress with 4"s lower with a coilover as cutting a few coils.
Your alignment should not suffer and camber wear will be minimal if you only take off a coil or so.
To cut coils, I would to remove the entire shock, spring and fork. Then take a cutting disc and cut the top coil and remove a half of a coil and then remove the other half of the coil. This way you can remove the two pieces without having to separate the shock and spring. Be careful don't put your fingers around the spring they are under pressure, thats why you should do it in steps.
But I do agree that you should just get some lowering springs instead but stay away from those coilvers they are nothing but trouble.

i have had coilover on 2 different cars and never had 1 problem with either camber wear, pulling or really crappy riding.
if you slam it 4" then you do get a bounce in the ride which isn't good for your struts, and i to have had chopped and heated springs. the time i had them cut i cut too much off and ended up breaking the springs thats when i changed to coilovers. they are good for lowering and raising your car at anytime but i do agree in lowering springs have a better ride etc... to them.
IMO you do get what you pay for.

And the point of my post is not encouraging anyone to chop springs but they are not as bad as everyone says they are if they are kept to a minimum. Most people say its the worst thing to do but they have never experienced it themselves and repeat the horror stories they heard over the net from some guy who chopped 8 coils.
I would rather drive a car with a coil or two chopped then one lowered the same on a sleeved coilover, for comfort anyways.

If your really interested in doing it you will have to remove the whole shock and spring assembly. Then take out the spring with a spring compressor. Use a saw's all to cut the coil.

by the way even though money might be tight, it's still worth it to buy some used springs off some of the members off the board. Your buddy could always try to trade + cash from someone for their springs, if the price is not within reach.

i really don't see why anyone would actually take the time to remove everything, cut it, and reassemble it. the time it would take, and the chances that you will break off the two rear bolts inside the bushings, and the fact you're making your car a pile of ****.... I would think it would deter anyone with a brain in their head from doing it.

oh, and not only is it bad for the car, but it also sounds like you two (you and your buddy) wouldn't have enough brain power to do this safely. tackle a smaller project first... maybe do a tune up on the poor car and change the oil
