Build up from scratch.

Build up from scratch.
Has anyone built a motor from the ground up? I can't afford a complete swap, so I was planning on buying a B16 or a B18 a piece at a time, maybe starting with a shortblock and build it up from there. Would it end up being more expensive than buying a complete swap? Thanks!

How about if I find parts that are stock, instead of buying aftermarket parts. Like better pistons, better valves, better...etc. Will it still cost more in that case?
I figured that if i put it together from scratch, I'd learn a lot more, and it'll be easier to trouble shoot and upgrade later.

You're right. I mean, if i buy a complete swap for, say, $4500, and upgrade it slowly with better parts over a few years. I might be looking at a possible $2-4000 on top of the $4500. And this will be done over several years. But, I would have my engine in my ride right away.
where as, if I build it piece by piece with performance parts from the start. I'd be looking at spending about the same amount, maybe more, but I wouldn't have my engine in my ride for months, if not years.
so much to think about, so little money!!!!
