I ussually end up doing most of the self adjusting myself.... so long as you adjust them right and the one side you don't replace has a good amount of pad left on the shoe then it should be ok.

yes at least for the 5th gen and older .. I have no experience with the 6th gen and newer drums.. but for the older ones, the adjustment came from reversing your car and hitting the brakes.. when you did that they were suppose to adjust however most people don't reverse fast enough or slam on their brakes hard enough in reverse or the adjuster screws just don't move far enough... it's a neat design and a cool Idea as to how it was all suppose to work ... but it never did work well.
