Bad Tranny??

I just picked up a 94 gsr and overall the car is in great shape....except for the tranny.
it's a gsr tranny and seems to be grinding - especially in third.
if i shift past 5 grand it will grind - even if i double clutch.
downshifting is a bear - i have to be going super slow to downshift that it's not even worth it.
there is no whirring or whining sound either - which is the only reason i think it may not be the synchro's.
other than that - around 3-4 grand rpm's it shifts GREAT!
i talked with an acura guy and he said that these tranny's are pretty much bullet proof so he thinks it may be the slave cylinder....i dunno.
i don't know a tonne about transmissions so i don't wanna dump unnecessary coin into it if i don't have to!!
anyone got any advice for me??

Honda/Acura transmissions do develope grinds sometimes as they get older. A simple solution would be to change the tranny fluid to GM Syncromesh Friction Modified or Penzoil Syncromesh. It is reported to fix the grinds and smooth the shifting.

Your car and tranny or both getting old. It could be worn out from being abused.

thanks man - i'll definitely give it a try.
i guess the worst case scenario is to get it rebuilt eventually.
any suggestions of a good guy to buy used tranny's off or who will rebuild it?

I had the same problem on my sol.

It was the master cylinder. THe fluid was BLACK and the resevoir was emtpy.

I replaced both the master and slave. Pretty easy to do yourself.

I have a Helms.
The master is the one connected to your pedal. It's on the firewall beside the Master cylinder for the brake.

When you push on it is sends the hydraulic fluid (Dot 3 or dot 4) to the slave which is bolted on the transmission. The fluid then pushes a piston out of the slave with pushes the clutch.

If you don't have fluid in there (like me) it's not going to push the clutch all the way. Or air in the line will do the same thing.

I know my master was the problem because the pedal in the cabin had grease on it and when I topped up the dot fluid, it was dripping inside the cabin.

*Warning* in case you didn't already know Dot fluid (which is also used in brakes) will eat the paint on your car so be careful.

Also, this might not be your problem, but it's something to check.

If you open the clutch master cylinder and the fluid is clean and clear, it's something else. Best to bring it to a specialist.

3rd gear grind is a common problem on B18s.
