Rad Fan HELP?
3 months ago I took out the rad fan in my 95 civic hatch because I thought it was broken since Ive never seen it or heard it come on.
so today I went to get my car E tested and took it on the highway and then straight into the shop and as the car was idling just before the test the car started to over heat and some (very little) rad fuild bubbled out of the over flow reservoir..... since it didn't have a fan....my bad lol so the couldn't do the test.
anyway I wanted to know how hot does the engine have to become before the fan starts? my one buddy said his wont kick in until its just over the half mark?
if that's the case my fan may not have been broken because it always stay just under the half mark while driving and never over heated because the air while driving kept it cool.
please help when does the fan start working???
Thanks

Dude.. you need to have a rad fan. Taking out an ESSENTIAL part of your cooling system is not a smart thing to do. Your vehicle overheated because you had no fan. That is a guarantee.. Now you may of done more damage to the engine if it severely overheated.

how do you know no damage was done? you've inspected all the seals and gaskets and parts and such in your cooling system and others affected by it in your engine?

Attitude does not get you anywhere.
Yes to answer your question it would kick in when its over half. Now it may have gone on while you had it, just never heard it because its a small fan and not like other cars where you can hear it from inside of the car.
Another thing to check is the fan switch and whether its working properly.
Just out of curiosity, how hot did it get?

the attitude is not appreciated. i was trying to point out you MAY have damaged something else you do not know about. so you should really pressure test your cooling system and all to make sure it is ok with no leaks and works fine. also if you havent you should bleed the system.
true because its only a half fan. you should really volt-meter it and check. or hook it up direct to a 12v battery and see if it works.. fuse could just be blown even

wasnt trying to give attitude just wanted an answer, and as far as how hot it got on the heat gauge maybe 60% after 5mins it was fine, after that happened i took it to my work jiffy lube and made sure everything was in good working order topped up the rad fuild etc
now that I know it takes a bit of heat for the fan to kick in ill get one and do a test on it.
Thanks for the help

the rad fan should turn on when the car hits 195 degrees F, which is well before your car gets to the "half-way" mark.
The car will heat up to 215 F before the temp gauge even thinks about moving, so I assure you your car was nice and hot if the gauge got up to the half-way point.
If you hook 12V up to the fan and it works, then you know the fan itself is ok. I'd then try to unhook the fan-switch located on the thermostat housing and jump the connector (with a paper clip or peice of wire) then the fan should come on as soon as you go 2 clicks forward with the key (accessory II position). If the fan doens't come on it could be a faulty fan-switch (thermoswitch) or a bad fan relay, or even a wiring problem.

i dont know chris personally but i do know he knows a hell of a lot about cars (especially hondas) so if i were you id listen to him, either take it into him so he can check it out, or do yourself a cylinder leakdown test and all.. honestly man better safe than sorry..
