d series tranny swap
my 97 civic si tranny is pretty much gone. car has 280000km on engine and tranny. I can get a 98 si engine and tranny for 500...should I do the motor motor and tranny swap or just replace the tranny? don't know where to begin on the swap but friends say it's easier then it looks, and they will help me...anything that might help me out? anything I might need to get before the swap? (renting a hoist). thanks so much

not a real bad price for the swap IF it's got a warranty even better. if the condition of the swap is good then not bad. This may be a god point in time for you to swap to a B series though. Also what I would do in this case is do the full swap motor and tranny, then keep your old stuff and re build them. Synchro's and LSD in the tranny and build the motor for boost.
That said what are YOUR plans for the car? you only have 1 post so it's not like anyone here knows you or what your car is/are about. if you are just using it as a grocery getter then I'd say just find the tranny you need, get a clutch kit and send out the flywheel to be machined, most machine shops charge $40-60 for this and call it a day. If you do change the motor, swap the clutch stuff and do the timing belt and water pump too. while the motor is out. Save time and money as well as avoid problems later on.
use the search function on here and you'll find a lot of other people have been down this road and see what they did and what grabs your interest.
