Stock tires better in snow!?

I like my rims, so rather than swap to steelies for the winter, I went to Wheels Direct and put on some Khumo Ecsta 711's since I was told it was an all-season kind of tire.

Yet when I was driving outside in the snow yesterday, I was having a hard time stopping and going, with stock Corollas passing me with ease!

Does this mean the stock tires are better?

haha... what wheels do you have, and what size?

thinner tires cut through slush better

also, automatic tranny cars are way easier to drive in winter conditions for stop and go traffic

i took mine off and put stock wheels back on. sure it looks gay but i don't want my 17" rims to break. Stock wheels are better in the winter because it's softer, which sticks to the road and the ice. I drove with my rims a few weeks before and there wasn't even an inch and i was already sliding.

ya get ready for a really slow and slippery winter, aren't 711's 'performance' tires? they're directional i'm pretty sure which makes them more performance than all season... i'm sure they won't kill you in the winter, but they sure raise the chance of it, the only way you'd be alright is if you had actually 'ALL SEASON' tires on... or SNOWS, if Wheels Direct says they're All Seasonish... there's obviously something wrong if they're claiming something the manufacturer isn't claiming..

im riding 2" drop on nordic icetrac 175/70/R13 and I haven't had a problem yet except I don't think it handles at well as it should because of my -2.5 camber.

Crappy Tire M&S are the best imo.

I had them on my old car durring the winter, and the gripped like no tomorrow. I never had a problem stopping, or taking off from a green light. While everyone else was slipping and slidding all around the side streets in my area, I just laughed at them, and just drove by. I used to love testing how well they gripped on a hill......all I'll say is...

Did I forget to mention that they cost me under $45 each tax in? (in the size I used)

All season tires suck in winter. Get real snow tires. The compound of all seasons are get too hard in cold weather like this and give you no traction.

Agreed, I had a set of Motomaster all-seasons on my old Civic and they were great. Got me through 3 winters with no problems at all. Never once got stuck, slid, etc. Can't argue with the price either.

As for needing snows for winter, I have driven on all-seasons for years and never had a problem. If you have a GOOD set of all-seasons, do all your driving within the city, and obviously drive accordingly, you will be fine without them.

All-season can perform to some extend, but it cannot break the barrier that Snow tires are built to do, obviously. So drive with caution.

And I will not use any Korean brand tires, period.

I went for "goodyear utltra grip ice" this winter and have been very very impressed! Although i've never had winter tires before so i don't have much comparison. What exrcoupe said about the tire compound is right though... my mechanic told me not to drive once the temp gets over 10 degress cuz the rubber would peel off the tires.
