you can't stop it once it's there... that type of rust comes from the inside out and the only way to get rid of it is to cut it out

I would say have it professionally fixed at a bodyshop and have them spray primer on it. IT wont look pretty but if they do it right and you get the car rust proofed your car will be ready to be painted in the spring.

No you have to cut out the metal I believe atleast 1 inch away from the rust and then weld in new metal? I may be wrong but thats what i think you have to do. IF you put in new metal and the metal is primered and the car rust proofed for the winter you shouldnt have an issue with the rust coming back.

So you are just doing a temp fix until next year, and then you are going to get it cut out and properly replaced?

If it's just surface rust you can just sand it down, primer it...and re-paint it.

i got my rust profesionally fixed, what he did was grinded out all the metal and welded in a new piece of metal. If i were u, id just spray soem rust check on there andgrind some of the rust away and just wait to get it all looking nice next year when it goes in for paint

the only REAL way to get rid of rust is to get it welded out, and even then the rust may come back where the new welds were placed... its a continous loosing battle, all you can do is help slow it down!!

Theres this Krylon spray that sprays onto the current rusts and says it prevents it from spreading. Maybe trying it would be good? I have it in my basement somewhere...

If the rust is starting behind the quarter panel of course its still gonna rust with Primer spray on it. Like bbarbulo said, its probably easier to just cut it out, save yourself some time and agravation bro.
