Engine Bay Cleaning.... What do you use?

What do you guys use to clean all that dirt and crap from you're engine bay? Does anyone have before/after shots?

Also, what can you use to clean a powercoated valve cover? (soap/water?)

Thanks,
Torrey

all i use is the pressure washer w/soap cuz mine's still like new..
any degreaser should work tho..like that orange type stuff..
then just rinse it down with soapy water followed by clean water..

dunno about the powder coated parts..never had to deal with them....tho ya, soapy water would be the safest route to take..

I did a search lately, and found a post about this awhile back.

Apparently GUNK reeks after it is used.
The suggested alternative was Simple Green or Mean Green.

Well, so far I've only been able to locate GUNk, and a Motomaster cleaner at crappy tire/walmart.

I can't find the other 2. Apparently the "Mean Green" is biodegradable, while the others aren't recommended to be used on asphalt surfaces.

Any suggestions, maybe a place in Mississauga that may have the "Mean Green" in stock???

Thanks

Cover your electronics and pull out the power washer

Simple green works wonders, I get it in the big jug from Can Tire to fill up the little spray bottle I have.

I also use WD-40 from the big jug I got at Can tire and pass it through my air compresser engine cleaner attachment, I coat the whole engine bay with WD, let it soak in and wipe away the dirt!

WD-40 won't hurt the electrics, actually it's good for it, as it displaces water, and it helps the hoses and wire insulation from cracking.

Doesn't really make sense to do it with the little WD spray can though.

You're not gonna find the automotive simple green in the car section at all CT stores. Look in the home cleaning products aisle, and get the all-purpose simple green. Works like a charm

looks like this:

Thanks dude.
I know, I called Crappy Tire last night, they guy said it wasn't in the automotive section.

I bought GUNK engine degreaser last night at walmart, and just tested it out a bit, sprayed it on the oil pan area, let it sit for about 2 min. and wiped off all the crap. It REALLY cleans it, I went over it with my hand after I had wiped it and nothing...my hand came away clean!
Excellent stuff, but a little too potent...apparently its not to be used on asphalt surfaces.
So I think I'll have to go with simple green.

Please let me know once you check.
I'm going to buy it tomorrow, and don;t want to get the wrong stuff again.

I called CRappy Tire, they guy in Auto. Parts said they have Simple Green with the waxes, cleaners.

Is the all-purpose one the same as the "degreaser" or is it a completely different type?

The automotive simple green comes in a black bottle. It looks like this:

It's supposed to be stronger, and more concentrated than the all-purpose home cleaning version.

I've tried both with the same results and if you ask me i think it's the same ****, just bottled differently.

THAT"S the stuff I use!

I have it in one of those spray bottles and I get the big jug and refill it, it's cheaper and it makes the tree huggers happy.

That stuff smells GREAT..

Excellent, thats what I bought!

Once it gets nice and sunny (hopefully soon), I can throw the engine out on my driveway and clean it up.

Any preference on brushes/rags used to clean it?

THANKS FOR THE HELP!!!(Jugglez and echien in particular )
