Cleaning the Engine Bay

Well my engine bay looks like it ran through crap and everything's all dusty and sandy and whatever got in there after 12 years of driving it. Anyway, I was wondering how do I clean the engine bay and all the parts to make it somewhat or even brand new looking. What parts of the engine do I have to cover or can I just spray the whole thing down without worries. My friend told me he did that and had no problems but then I'm not too sure if he even did it cuz his engine bay still looks like crap. Also, what's the best type of engine shampoo or degreaser do you guys recommend for removing tough dirt and stuff? Any suggestions and advice would be appreciated, thanks.

O/T...

I see that you corrected your spelling error.

It's ok though... I understood the first post.
