wireless networking help

ok so i went out and bought a laptop for school, i also got futureshop to throw in a dlink router, and a usb flashdrive since i was spending more money than i intended

anyways, i'm not new to routers or anything, ive had one for a couple of years, with no real problems.

now i set up the router and everything and the desktop that is connected directly to the router via ethernet cable is pretty good. however my laptop keeps droping the connection, and it keep going up and down when ever u use it...i was downloading a video clip and it was going at 5.5 kb per second!

i then connected the laptop directly to the router via ethernet cable and the internet was normal again..

can anyone help me with my problem? maybe i did something wrong when settign up my router?

dlink is closed today or else i wudda called them

the router is in the basement, and i was using it in my room, then i came to the basement and i was about 10 feet away and i had the same problem. i'm getting good signal around the house, it always at very good or exelend, but my transfer rates are really crappy sometimes, they go donw to like 1mps sometimes..and at that point the intenert doesent work at all

thanks guys

Did you check into doing a firmware upgrade on the router or some updated drivers from dlink site?

try working 1 foot away.

try and figure out if it is a signal issue, a hardware issue, or a software issue, and move from there.

-firmware
-drivers
-config (doesn't sound like it)
-signal interference.

Not sure if this will help but you can also try changing the channel that the wireless signal is running on. Its possible that something in the house running at the same band is interfering like a cordless phone. You should be able to do this within the router setup. Also try disabling your windows firewall on the Wireless connection only.
