Windows 8 Gets Ready For Debut At
The world got a sneak peek at Windows 8 at the D9 conference in May. Now, Microsoft is ready to more fully peel back the covers on the next version of its flagship operating system.
That look will come next week at the company's Build developer conference in Anaheim, Calif.
Microsoft has already shown a fair bit about where it is headed. At D9 in May, the company showed off a new look for Windows, led by a start screen that bears more resemblance to Windows Phone than to the traditional desktop. Other features revealed on stage include an App Store and support for apps written in HTML and Javascript.
The company has also said it wants an operating system as at home on an 8-inch tablet as it is on a powerful desktop connected to large-screen monitors.

Martin, what do you mean by "distro"? I have linux ubuntu on our older laptop (dual core 1.7 if I remember correctly) and it brought it to life. Vista slowed it down SOOO much. With vista it would stutter like mad trying to play HD videos. With linux it plays HD videos no problem. No bs, just a good solid basic OS.

Mike, by distro I meant distribution...which is ubuntu what you have. Their multi workspace environment with cube view is cool. And they've had that for years now.
Shlammed, ofcourse it won't replace windows because people are afraid to use anything else and are just close minded. For basic use of internet/office etc its a wonderful os. Works quicker and less laggy than xp/vista/7. Certain distributions of linux are VERY user friendly and no need to use command prompt. Whole office apps are free and much more.

lol you have no idea what you are talking about....you are talking solely from home user point of view, which is valid. home user only utilizes what 30-40% of what windows platform is capable of doing. and MS doesnt really care about home users, they make almost all of their revenue through corp sales

Well let's see, I do not work or belong to any corporation, nor does anybody I know. Most every day people could not care less about anything other than, being able to watch/download movies, browse Internet, email/chat via twitter/facebook. So when i see sales reps trying to push new windows OS to older/everyday people, I feel sorry for them.
Me not knowing anything...hmm right. You want to know why Linux is better than Windows? Few reasons...How much is microsoft office? you get it free with linux. How much is windows 7? Linux IS FREE! Windows has, is and will be prone to malware while ubuntu is a LOT safer. Oh and its a lot faster because Linux does not have a registry that is 1) binary and 2) gigantic like Windows.
haha and here's something, atleast Linux developers do NOT release an OS unless its finished and bug free...*cough* vista.
KTHXBYE

PS: Linux is def solid, BTW i have used knoppix, back in the days (of course for cracking admin psw in commons), Ubuntu with compiz fusion (for fun), red hat/fedora (work related), back track (training) was good as well.....but even after all that use i still prefer windows
