I don't pay for rotation and balancing anymore...I think I only paid $30 at the most for rotate and balance. Mounting new tires was a bit more expensive, not much though maybe $40.

sooooo to really answer your question, they can be done both ways. Having them done off the car is the easiest and cheapest way to do them but you still may find you have imbalances at each corner. The other way is balancing the wheels on the car which is the best way to do it but not many places use this way due to it being more work for them. The reason its better to do it this way is because your not just balancing the wheel/tire but the entire rotating assembly (brake rotor etc). The only real downside to this for the customer is that you have to get them all rebalanced when you go to rotate your tires.
i never knew there is an actual wheel balancer that can be done to a wheel without it being removed. any more info on this?
i have never seen this in my life and i worked at a state of the art shop before.

Capo is completely correct. On-car balancing as they call it is dun at specialty tire shops. It normaly costs more. It does give a better balance and its a pain in the *** to do so im happy i dont have to do it anymore. If your just going with winter rims and rubber i would just get your run of the mill "computer balance". goto someone you know that does tires and knows tires. With one spin of a tire someone who knows what they are doing can tell you if the tire was mounted properly how your alignment is if its cupping ...

Well, I've never seen a wheel balanced on a car, but it would make more sense to do it on the car.

I used to install tires, which meant balancing them too.

Where do you guys go to get your tires balanced for $60-$100???? That's a total rip off. I would not pay more than $20 for all four tires.

It should only take 5-10 mins to balance all four tires.

ahh i see so only at specialty tire shops.
which makes more sense to since they do it day in and day out.

but how does it work exactly?
the wheels are suspended in the air with the car or what?
any pics of a machine?

maybe he's confused with alignments and wheel balancing or something. but it's simple! you put it on the machine, it spins and tells you where to hammer on the weights.
