if they unionized car toyota car prices would go up year over year regardless of how the market was doing...
unions are one of the big downfalls of the Big 3... i'm glad they didn't unionize...
unions had their place in society but these days they just suck money from companies, many times to their detriment...

Tell that to the people I work with. They will still be pushing for it. Having been employed there now for almost a year and seeing how hard they work people and how much they expect from their employees, a union might not be a bad thing.

^ it'll be a bad thing when what happens to the big 3 happens to toyota and people loose their jobs... one of my uncles worked for ford in windsor and now has no job... *shrugs
i still def think unions did their part when working conditions were unfair and hours weren't regulated but now with the amount of legislation governing most things, unions have too much power... slacker employees get the same benefits as those who work hard... wtf is the deal with that

I used to work for IBM. I have first hand knowledge of how a management team can take advantage of their employees in the name of profit. Unobtainable work demands coupled with refusal to pay overtime. IBM HR wanted nothing to do with their employees grievances because employee policy changes affected the company shares.
I'm not a teacher but I work for the school board now. I pay my dues to CUPE and it's worth every penny.

Seriously. Where I work, a unionized worker (I'm not) got caught stealing a ton of supplies and he was fired. The union got his job back. I have no idea how this happens, when I work in security and loss prevention and the company pays me to catch ISH like this....GAY

unions for the win!!!!!!!!!
the lazy worker is only 5% of unionized workers! and companys always use this 5% as a scapegoat. any one with half a brain would know to work hard as a union member to keep the good name of the union.
if it weren't for high paying union jobs non union outfits would have nothing to compete with to attract workers to stay or even apply and everyone would suffer pay losses.
The rich would grow richer, no more middle class and the poor would grow poorer.
hope every one likes minimum wage!

5% is your estimate of lazy workers!? My first part-time job was unionized and I can assure you that 5% is a horrible underestimate of the laziness I encountered. Not one person was concerned about keeping "the good name of the union". lol, what are you talking about? If Toyota had a union you think workers would suddenly be motivated to work to keep the "good name" of the union!? What does that matter, once it is in there it is not leaving, regardless of a good or bad name!
Your economic argument is also mistaken. Without unions everyone would get minimum wage? The labour market is about supply and demand. If you have skills that are in demand relative to the supply you will get an appropriate wage. If you are stuck with a poor education, no work ethic, no experience, no skills, then you won't get paid very well, because there is no demand for that-unless you have a union! Then you can be useless but get an entry level position and work you way up an organization being hired based on seniority. So your argument is true as far as non-skilled and lazy workers are concerned. Without unions they would get minimum wage, with them they keep jumping up the pay scale for no good reason. Which do you think is more appropriate?
Your economic argument also supports Toyota not unionizing, on the (mistaken) basis that the only reason wages in the auto industry are competitive is because Ford and GM are unionized. Thus Toyota does not need to also unionize.
The union I had to pay dues to never did anything for me but make me earn less money than I should have. Whenever I would have been able to work overtime they would always give it to a more senior worker, even if that person didn't normally do my job!
They would make a big commotion when the contract was coming to an end, pretending they were going to go on strike, just to end up with the same 3% pay increase everyone had always received (with or without a union). All the while staying at the nicest hotels in the city, racking up massive bills paid by the employees!
They were so full of grievances for false claims that if any real issue happened, it wouldn't be addressed for months because of the back-log of issues from people looking for a way to get paid leave from work without a valid reason.
My experience with a union was horrible!
