limiting torrent access

im on bell sympatico, and the interent is being shared, but i think some ppl are killing the torrent downlads and its killing my browsing speed.. but when i check the packet transfers using the router it still seems to be small .. on the lan ..

is there another reason why its going so slow? im geeting like a 100 kb download.. using speedtest websites

whats up with this? can i block torrent downloads somehow or limit their download speed using the router?

thanks

Depending on your router and firmware version there might be a QoS (Quailty of service) menu. You can set limits on any IP on the home network. I know with my Linksys Wireless G has this option.

perhaps packet shaping and priority is being done on the head end..

ie the ISP

What happens when you change service ports..

service ports...? the only place where i can change the ports is under the heading "remote management"
choices are 8080,1080 and 80 ...whihch one should be set at or does it matteer? if ppl are using torresnt wouldnt the packet receive number be high... its only at like 3000 something for 5 ppl .. i find that weird and the speed to be this slow

I have my torrents all going through one port and I get good speed from them and it does not affect my surf speed. I am on sympatico and also use a D-link.

check this site it's already a link to your specific router now just pick what you want to use it for and read from there....it's very easy...for example I selected Azureus cause that is what I use to dl torrents. I also have one set up just for limewire

here

i believe I forwarded them to my router so i guess if your modem acts like a router point them towards your modem
