Using a torrent doesn't mean piracy, the bit torrent method of transfer is pretty efficient for large files, its just gotten associated with piracy because thats what its mostly used for...
There are many legitimate services/products that use bittorrent to transfer files (Revision3's content comes to mind)

when i was using windows i used utorrent, but you have to make sure w/e port you set in client preferences to have those ports open/forwarded in your router(i usually make a rule on forwarding and open 500 ports till the download is finish and then disable the rule after till the next use).
also put your upload to low priority and give less bandwidth, and wise-versa for the download. because the upload speed effects the download speed, so just have to find the right balance.
now i use ktorrent for kde4
