Used Cars
So for some reason this year my dad's 94 accord failed emissions. The thing runs perfectly fine and we were rather shocked. We don't know whats wrong with it its getting diagnosed by a shop right now (CO is too high).
I was going to ask my parents to help me out with a purchase for a first car, and for me I'd rather have somewhat of an older one, I guess a beater that I can learn on and what not.
I guess my question is, becuase of the accord's failure in the emissions test, are used cars prone to this problem?
My dad never liked used cars and I think that this incident just helped to solidify his decision
Also on top of this, I've been browsing the classified section and what do you guys think is reasonable for a first car? Are those even really worth it as a primary vehicle or no?
Thanks alot

a lot of cars fail emissions and the fix is usually not too costly. If it is your first car, i would definitely get a used car. Don't get too old of a car because then you will always be fixing it. try to get at least 96 or newer.

Hondas are one of the most reliable cars to own as long as they are maintained properly. If you don't take car of them, then expect problems just like any unreliable car.
Unfortunately, they also have some of the highest insurance rates due to high theft rates and the costs of repairs. Before you decide on a Honda of some kind, check with your insurance company on their rates.
I would consider a 98-00 Civic hatchback. Simple to maintain and modify if you choose to, good on gas and parts are plentiful. Classic good looks and later on you can swap a better motor into it.

dude, if you are worried about emissions being your major problem buying a used car... you better get someone else to buy it for you...
thats why most cars are sold with etest an safety and etest is nothing unless you start changing everything, but if you exhaust and sensors are all in check... you should be good... if you buys someones POS that wasnt maintained then you are just asking to replace everything, but buy one well looked after and you could be good for a long time.
you need to be more concerned about engine/suspension/electronics/tranny because those are what get you to work/school in the morning... not your emissions, and even puffing whiite smoke you are still moving... (hahha, not for long)

honda's can pass etest as long as it has a good cat and all the sensors are good. its really hard for them to fail imo. but if you got the cash buy a newer one if not get a 88-91 . thats if you want a honda. i find that they are really easy to work on compared to alot of vehicles. more so the older ones like 88-91 cuz the engines are small and theres tons of room to work on them. not to mention they are easy to swap in a new motor.

just buy a car w/ E test already.. so dat U dont have to worry.. make sure check ur cat. and all the sensors. if still working.. And if U do E test make sure dont use high flow cat. Dat can give U head ache. well gud luck man....

I would put my money on the EGR ports being plugged up.....not uncommon on Accords.

used car is the way to go because it will be ur first car. cars fail emmisions all the time, my 1991 civic failed all i had to do was basic things such as change spark plugs, air filter, egr valve, and all cost under 30bucks oh and plus i put in a tank of sunocos 94 ultra in it and beat it hard before i did it the second time and it passed with flying colours, i actually recommend u try that. and make sure that teh car is really hot before u do the test again.

Thanks for the replies guys. The accord passed now. A mechanic that we nomrally bring our car to (he doesn't do tests) just cleaned up some stuff in there, nothing needed replacing, and now it passed.
