in order for you to transfer your car to your name, you will need to have insurance, and at that time you will pay for taxes, i dont' remember which fee you pay, if its the bill of sales or black book value. moreover you don't need an e-test and safety to issue a temp plate. the ownership has to say FIT in order for you to get a temp without providing safety certificate. but if its FIT, you can get the temp and get it saftied and e-test so that you can get plates. g'luck.

He is right. I was really nice with the girl I had when I registered my winter beater, and she didn't charge me any taxes. So, I guess it is up to them but they don't HAVE to?

You pay either your RECEIPT(what you say you bought it for) or the BOOK VALUE, which ever is LARGER..

You have to pay taxes just to get a 10-day permit? As for the insurance part they don't ask for proof they just make you write down your policy number and sign saying it's not false information. At least that's what happened last time I bought a car.

I just got a temp plate yesterday and tranfered the car into my name at the same time. You have to pay 8% taxe on either the wholesale value ($3125 on a 93 civic coupe) or the purchase price, whatever is greater. You pay the taxes when you transfer the title over to your name, regardless if it is plated or not. To get a temp plate, the vehicle must be "FIT", basicly, a safety has to be done on the car. The only thing that doesn't have to be done is emissions.

Total price for me doing everything.....

Switching ownership-$10
Taxes on vehicle-$250
UVIP (used vehicle information package)-$20
Temp plate-$15

Keep in mind that for some stupid reason, you cannot use debit for the temp plate or the UVIP. I had to strap on my hiking boots and walk about 5 blocks to find a bank, I wasn't impressed.

Hope that helps

MAtt

There's too much conflicting information here. Last time I bought a car I:

1) didn't have a safety or emissions and still got a 10-day permit with just my insurance policy #
2) didn't pay taxes on anything because you need a safety to transfer the car into your name.

I just checked MTO's website and it says to bring the original "fit" permit. Meaning the ownership that you get when the car is sold to you. They will give you a 10-day with that, but when it comes to finally registering the car in your name you have to do another safety and emissions test.

I didn't realize that you could use the previous owners "fit" title to get a temp plate for the car, I just wanted to post my info from experiences and doing it yesterday. As for having to do a safety to transfer it into your name, you don't have too. I have bought cars to work on and just wanted the title in my name so that the previous owner couldn't try any funny stuff.

You bought them to work on but did you get plates and stuff for them to legally drive on the road? As far as I know the law is emissions every 2 years or whatever and safety everytime it changes ownership.

Well, if you want to have the car on the road you have to safety it, but not to just change ownership. I bought the car (89 CRX Si), then worked on it for about 2 months. When I was done working on it, I went and got a safety done. The whole time I owned the CRX I had it in my name, without a safety done on it. If you look at the ownership of a car that hasn't gotten a safety done, the top of it where it normally says "FIT", it will say "UN-FIT", meaning you can't get a temp plate or anything until it's "FIT".
